Resume template with a projects section

Short answer

Daniel prints a projects section right after work experience and before education, so case studies sit next to the jobs they grew out of. All seven templates print projects, but Daniel's rounded heading pills suit designers and product people. The fictional sample is a UX designer moving from agency work to an in-house role, with two jobs and three projects.

Why Daniel suits a projects section resume

Daniel prints skills, then work experience, then projects, so a designer's case studies follow straight on from the jobs. Its section headings sit in rounded grey pills, a softer look than the rule-only layouts, and it is the template aimed at designers and product managers.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian prints projects in the same place, after experience and before education, with plain grey rules and no colour; pick it for a plainer page.

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Point to the projects by type ("three case studies in checkout and account flows") so a hiring manager knows the evidence continues past the jobs.
  2. Skills. Daniel shows skills in a three-column grid without group labels, one group per column. Research and design methods go in the first group, tools such as Figma in the second, and working habits in the third.
  3. Work Experience. Keep job bullets about your role on the team and its outcomes. Save the step-by-step story of a single piece of work for the projects section, so the two parts do not repeat each other.
  4. Projects. Each project gets a name, one line of context and two or three results. Context is who it was for, how long it ran and your role (sole designer, one of two); results are what changed after launch or what testing found. Work under an NDA can be described without naming the client.
  5. Education. Degree or certificate program last. A UX bootcamp can sit here with its dates; mention its capstone only if that is not already one of your projects.

UX designer with five years at digital agencies, focused on checkout, onboarding and account flows for retail and banking clients. Three case studies below show research, prototyping and measured results. Looking for an in-house product design role.

Experience

Senior UX Designer, Lantern and Loom Digital, Austin, TX (03/2023 to Present)

  • Lead design on two or three client accounts at a time, from discovery workshops to developer handoff.
  • Run moderated usability tests and turn the findings into prioritized design changes.

  • Ran stakeholder interviews and mapped customer journeys at the start of new projects.
  • Checked front-end builds against designs with developers before each release.

Projects

Checkout redesign for an outdoor gear retailer: Client project at Lantern and Loom, 6 weeks, lead designer with one researcher.

  • Cut checkout from seven steps to four after testing two prototypes with eight customers.
  • Cart abandonment fell from 71% to 64% in the first month after launch, per the client's analytics.

Account opening flow for a regional credit union: Client project, 10 weeks, one of two designers; client name withheld.

  • Mapped the paper and online journeys and removed two duplicate identity checks.
  • Designed form patterns that passed the client's WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility review.

How to make the sample yours

Pick projects that match the job

For a role focused on checkout and payments, lead with the checkout redesign even if another project looked better. Two strong projects beat four thin ones.

Write the description line as context

The line under each project name should answer for whom, how long and in what role. The sample's "6 weeks, lead designer with one researcher" does that in a few words.

Name projects the way your portfolio does

Add your portfolio to the header links and give each project the same title it has there, so a reader can find the matching case study in one click.

Swap design work for your field's equivalent

Engineers can list a system they built, marketers a campaign, analysts a model or dashboard. The structure, context first and results second, carries over unchanged.

Describe confidential work without breaking it

Give the industry and the problem ("a regional credit union's account opening flow") and leave out client names, screenshots and figures you are not allowed to share.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • user research
  • usability testing
  • wireframing
  • prototyping
  • Figma
  • design systems
  • information architecture
  • interaction design
  • accessibility (WCAG)
  • journey mapping
  • stakeholder workshops
  • design handoff

Mistakes to avoid

  • Copying the same bullet into a job and a project. If a project came from a job, keep the job line short and put the detail in the project.
  • Projects with no outcome. "Redesigned the app" says nothing; "cut checkout from seven steps to four after testing with eight customers" does.
  • Presenting tutorial exercises as client work. Label practice pieces as personal or course projects.
  • Squeezing five or more projects onto one page. Choose the two or three that fit the posting and leave the rest to your portfolio.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the projects section go on a resume?

After work experience in every layout here. Daniel, Meridian, FAANGPath and Olivia print it directly after the jobs, Catalyst puts skills in between, and Henrietta and Leslie print it after both education and skills. Templates fix the order, so choose one by where you want projects to sit.

How many projects should I put on a resume?

Two or three, chosen for the job. With little work history, three or four can carry the page instead.

Can I list personal projects on a resume?

Yes, if they show skills the job needs. Label them as personal and give them the same detail as paid work: what it was, who it was for and a result.

Can projects go above work experience?

None of the seven templates prints projects above work experience. If you have no jobs to list, leave that section empty; the heading is skipped and the projects move up the page.

How do I show my part in a team project?

State your role in the description line (one of three designers, research lead) and write the bullets only about work you did yourself.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 11 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
