Dental resume template
Short answer
Leslie is a good fit for dental resumes because it prints work experience straight after the summary, ahead of skills, and a dentist hires on chairside evidence: the procedures you assist, the images you take, the sterilization routine you keep. The fictional sample is a Certified Dental Assistant in a busy general practice. Hygienists and front desk staff can keep the layout and swap in their own procedures, codes and systems.

Why Leslie suits a dental resume
Leslie puts work experience directly under the summary and before the skills rows. In a dental office the procedures you have assisted on and the infection control routine you run say more than a software list, so they should be read first. The centred blue header is the only colour, which suits a clinical practice.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian moves labelled skill rows above the jobs, which helps front desk and billing staff whose practice software and insurance coding are the first filter.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Say where you work (operatory, hygiene chair or front desk), the kind of practice (general, pediatric, orthodontic, oral surgery) and the credential a dentist checks first. A CDA, a hygiene license with its state or an expanded function permit belongs in this sentence and in the headline, because Leslie prints certifications near the bottom.
- Work Experience. Write about the chair: the procedures you assist on (crowns, endodontics, extractions, implants), patients per day, the images you take and one bullet on infection control such as instrument reprocessing or autoclave spore testing. Front desk staff swap these for scheduling, insurance verification, treatment plan presentation and collections.
- Skills. Clinical skills go in Technical: four-handed dentistry, radiography by image type, intraoral scanning, impressions and temporaries. Tools holds the practice and imaging software (Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, the sensor software). Keep Soft Skills to what patients notice, such as calming nervous children.
- Education. A dental assisting certificate or diploma with school and year. If the program was CODA-accredited, say so in the detail line: graduation from one is a recognised route to the DANB CDA.
- Certifications. Write credentials in full: Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) from DANB, BLS with its year, and any state radiography or expanded function permit. DANB builds the CDA from three exams (radiation health and safety, infection control and general chairside assisting), and every eligibility pathway needs current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS, so renew a lapsed card before you apply.
- Continuing education. Continuing education shows you keep up between renewals. List the course, hours and year, newest first, and keep only courses that relate to the job, such as digital impressions or sedation monitoring.

Marisol Vega
Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), General and Pediatric Dentistry
Eugene, OR | marisol.vega@example.com | (541) 555-0146
Certified Dental Assistant with six years in general and pediatric practices. Assists on crowns, root canals and extractions, takes and mounts digital radiographs, and keeps the sterilization log and weekly spore testing on schedule for a four-chair office.
Experience
Lead Dental Assistant, Riverbend Family Dentistry, Eugene, OR (04/2022 to Present)
- Assist two dentists across four operatories, about 18 patients a day, on crowns, bridges, root canals and simple extractions.
- Take bitewing, periapical and panoramic images on digital sensors; a positioning checklist I wrote for new assistants cut retakes by about a third.
- Run instrument reprocessing and weekly autoclave spore tests, and keep the sterilization log the office manager reviews each month.
- Take intraoral scans for same-day crowns, so most single-crown patients finish in one visit.
- Train each new assistant on tray setups and the office infection control checklist.
Dental Assistant, Little Molars Pediatric Dentistry, Springfield, OR (06/2019 to 03/2022)
- Seated and prepared children aged 2 to 15 for exams, sealants and fillings, using tell-show-do with nervous patients.
- Entered treatment notes and CDT codes in Dentrix so the front desk could submit claims the same day.
- Called parents to confirm Friday clinic appointments, which cut no-shows on the busiest day.
Continuing education
- Digital impressions and same-day crowns, 6 hours, 2025
- Infection prevention update for dental teams, 3 hours, 2024
Education
Certificate, Dental Assisting, Willamette Valley Community College (05/2019). CODA-accredited program

How to make the sample yours
Match the kind of practice
Pediatric offices look for calm with children, sealants and fluoride; oral surgery offices look for surgical setups and sedation monitoring; orthodontic offices look for bonding and retainer work. Rewrite two bullets around the practice you are applying to, using only duties you have done.
Name the images you take
Bitewings, periapicals, panoramic and cone beam scans are separate skills, and so are digital sensors versus phosphor plates. List the ones you take without help and the software you view them in.
Use the numbers an office manager tracks
Patients seen per day, chairs covered, same-day treatment and reappointment rates are already in the practice reports. One or two of them make a bullet concrete; keep them modest and true.
Move the credential into the headline
The sample headline reads Certified Dental Assistant (CDA). A hygienist writes Registered Dental Hygienist with the licensing state; an expanded function assistant names the permit. The headline is the first place a dentist looks.
Translate experience from outside dentistry
Hotel and restaurant staff bring scheduling, payments and handling upset guests, which map onto the front desk. Medical assistants and veterinary technicians bring clinical routines. Rewrite the old job in dental vocabulary rather than leaving the reader to make the link.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

- four-handed dentistry
- dental radiography
- infection control
- instrument sterilization
- Standard Precautions
- CDT codes
- treatment planning
- intraoral scanning

Mistakes to avoid
- Duties every assistant shares ("cleaned rooms, seated patients") with no procedures, volumes or imaging named.
- Leaving the CDA or hygiene license only at the bottom of the page, where it is read last.
- Claiming duties your state does not allow your role to perform, such as scaling or coronal polishing without the permit.
- Patient names, case photos or anything copied from a chart, even with the name blacked out.

Frequently asked questions
What should a dental resume say about infection control?
Name the routines you own: instrument reprocessing, autoclave spore testing, operatory turnover, waterline care. CDC's summary of infection prevention in dental settings builds on Standard Precautions and notes that lapses such as unmonitored autoclaves have led to documented transmission, so a dentist reads these lines as patient safety.
Is the DANB CDA worth listing if my state does not ask for it?
Yes. It shows you passed national exams in radiation health and safety, infection control and general chairside assisting, which helps when you move states or apply to an office that does not know your work. State permits and registrations are separate, so list those as well.
I am moving from medical assisting into dental. What carries over?
Vitals, charting, patient intake, sterilization and scheduling all transfer. Put them in dental terms (seating and preparing patients, updating health histories, reprocessing instruments) and add any dental assisting course or radiography training you have started.
Can front desk and billing staff use this template too?
Yes, with the clinical bullets replaced by scheduling, insurance verification, treatment plan presentation and collections. Mention the practice software and that you code claims with CDT, the ADA's Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature, which is revised every year.
How long should a dental assistant resume be?
One page for most assistants and front desk staff. Hygienists and dentists with several practices, specialty training or teaching can run to two, but keep the license and current practice on the first page.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.

- Dental Assisting National Board (DANB): Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam (the CDA exam includes the RHS, ICE and General Chairside Assisting (GC) exams; Pathway I is graduation from a CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program; all pathways require current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS from a DANB-accepted provider)
- American Dental Association: CDT: Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature (the CDT Code assures consistency in documenting dental treatment; the Code Maintenance Committee meets every year to agree changes for the next edition)
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings: Basic Expectations for Safe Care (Standard Precautions as the foundation; applies to all dental personnel including nonclinical staff; documented transmission linked to improper handpiece sterilization and unmonitored autoclaves)
