Public relations resume template
Short answer
Leslie suits public relations resumes because experience prints straight after the summary, and PR hiring managers want coverage won, spokespeople prepared and crises handled before a list of tools. The fictional sample produced local TV news for four years before moving to a Seattle agency, where she leads media relations for B2B technology clients, and a short list of selected coverage closes the page.

Why Leslie suits a public relations resume
Leslie prints work experience right after the summary and before the skills rows, which suits a field judged on results such as coverage, launches and crisis work. The centred blue header and short blue underlines are its only colour, so the page looks polished without competing with the clients you represent.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta is the conventional business layout with education after experience, a sober choice for corporate communications, public affairs and investor relations.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Name your side (agency or in-house), your practice (media relations, corporate communications, crisis, public affairs, consumer, healthcare, technology) and the kind of outlets you place stories in. PR is organised by practice and sector, so a reader looks for both in the first two lines.
- Work Experience. Give coverage with context: how many pieces, how many in the outlets the client ranked as tier one, which messages appeared, and what followed (inbound leads, a policy meeting, a launch that landed). Add the work around coverage: spokesperson preparation, statements, launches, measurement. Leave out advertising value equivalents; AMEC, the communication measurement association, campaigns to end their use.
- Skills. Technical: writing and media relations methods (pitching, press releases, briefing books, crisis statements, message testing). Tools: media databases and monitoring (Muck Rack, Cision, Meltwater) plus any social listening or analytics. Leslie prints these as labelled rows, so keep each one tight.
- Education. Journalism, communications, English and political science degrees are common. One line, plus a relevant internship if you are early in your career.
- Selected coverage (client work). A short "Selected coverage" list gives a reader something to check. Describe each item by outlet type, topic and result rather than pasting headlines, and include only client work you are allowed to share.

How to make the sample yours
Tier your coverage
Agree with each client which outlets count as tier one, then report against that list. "30 tier-one stories out of 140" says more than "140 media hits", and it is how agency leaders judge account teams.
Cite the ethics code you work by
The PRSA Code of Ethics sets out six values (advocacy, honesty, expertise, independence, loyalty, fairness) and provisions on the free flow of information, disclosure of information, safeguarding confidences and conflicts of interest. If you have written disclosure language, handled a conflict or corrected an error, that earns a bullet.
Disclose paid influence correctly
For creator and influencer work, the FTC says to disclose any financial, employment, personal or family relationship with a brand, placed where it is hard to miss. PR staff who ran creator campaigns should show they built that into the brief.
Translate journalism or politics
Former reporters and producers know deadlines, news judgement and what a newsroom will reject; campaign and legislative staff know message discipline and stakeholders. Lead the older job with those, as the sample does with booking guests and fact-checking scripts.
Add the APR when it fits
PRSA describes the Accreditation in Public Relations process as an online application, a panel presentation, a monitored online exam and renewal over time. It suits mid-career practitioners; once earned, add it to the headline beside your title.

- Naming clients or crises covered by a confidentiality agreement.
- Claiming you "got" a story a journalist reported on their own. Say what you pitched, prepared or provided.

Frequently asked questions
How do I move from journalism to public relations?
Lead with what newsrooms taught you: news judgement, writing to deadline, verification and contacts. Then show one or two PR-style results, such as a pitch you would have accepted as a reporter. Make the PR role your headline so the newsroom title reads as an asset.
How should PR results be measured on a resume?
By coverage quality and outcome: tier-one stories against an agreed list, message pull-through, share of voice and what changed afterwards. Leave out advertising value equivalents: AMEC, the communication measurement association, campaigns to end their use as a metric.
Should I list media contacts or outlets on my resume?
Name outlet types and sectors ("national business press, logistics trade titles") rather than individual journalists. Contacts are discussed in interviews, not printed.
Is the APR worth getting?
It can help mid-career practitioners in agencies, government and nonprofits who want a recognised credential. Early-career staff usually gain more from strong coverage examples.
How long should a public relations resume be?
One page for account executives and specialists. Directors and heads of communications with long client or crisis records can use two.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
