Social services resume template

Short answer

Leslie works well for social services: experience prints right after the summary, so caseload, outcomes and coordination with partners lead, with a languages row in the skills. The fictional sample is a bilingual case manager at an Albuquerque family services agency who started in a youth shelter, with a 28-family caseload, housing outcomes at follow-up, case conferences and documentation that passed funder audits.

Why Leslie suits a social services resume

Leslie prints experience straight after the summary, and in social services the population you serve, your caseload and the outcomes families reached matter more than a skills list. One blue accent in the header keeps the page warm but professional, and the labelled skill rows give languages a line of their own.

Second choice: Daniel. Daniel prints skills first with softer grey heading pills, a good fit for community outreach and program roles.

Leslie template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. State the population you serve (families, older adults, youth, people experiencing homelessness, people with disabilities), the setting and your caseload. Hiring managers match staff to populations, and caseload size tells them the pace you can sustain.
  2. Work Experience. Outcomes here are about people staying housed, connected or safe, counted carefully: households housed at follow-up, benefits secured, goals met, referrals completed, documentation audits passed. Keep identifying details out completely; counts and rates do the work.
  3. Skills. Practice skills (assessment, service planning, crisis intervention) in Technical, the case management system and HMIS in Tools, and languages in their own row. Community agencies frequently list a second language as a requirement.
  4. Education. BSW, MSW or a related degree such as psychology or human services, with field placement details early in your career. ASWB exams are set at bachelors and masters levels among others, so name the degree exactly.
  5. Certifications. Any license with its state, plus trainings agencies and funders look for, such as mental health first aid, CPR or trauma-informed care. State and provincial boards issue social work licenses, and ASWB offers associate, bachelors, masters, advanced generalist and clinical exams.

How to make the sample yours

Write licensure status plainly

Licensed (type and state), "application in progress" or "eligible to test". ASWB tells candidates to apply to their state or provincial board first, so confirm which license your degree and state allow before naming a target.

Protect client privacy in every line

Use counts and outcomes, never stories that could identify someone, even with names removed. The NASW Code of Ethics lists the dignity and worth of the person among its core values, and a resume should reflect that.

Translate from other fields

Teachers, nurses, customer service staff and youth workers bring assessment, crisis handling and documentation skills. Map them to case management language: intake, service plans, referrals, follow-up.

Show systems coordination

Schools, clinics, courts, benefits offices, landlords: name the partners you coordinate with and give one example of a case conference or joint plan.

Adapt for program or grant roles

Program coordinators and managers lead with participants served, outcomes against funder targets, budgets and reports submitted. Keep one direct-service line to show you understand the work on the ground.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Client stories with details that could identify a person or family.
  • "Helping people" as the whole summary. Name the population, setting and caseload.
  • Calling yourself a social worker when your job title or license says something else. Use the title you actually hold.
  • Leaving out documentation and audits, which funders and supervisors check closely.

Frequently asked questions

What should a social services resume include with no experience?

Field placements, volunteering, youth work, caregiving or customer service, with the population served and what you did. Add languages, crisis or first aid training, and evidence of careful documentation.

Do I need a license for social services jobs?

Not for every role. Case aides, advocates and many community positions hire without one, while clinical and some social work titles require a state license. Check the posting and your state board.

How do I show outcomes without breaking confidentiality?

Use counts and rates: households housed at follow-up, referrals completed, goals met. Never include names, locations or details that could point to a person.

Should I list my field placement?

Yes, early in your career: agency type, population and main tasks. After two or three years of paid work it can shrink to a line under education.

How long should a social services resume be?

One page for most direct-service roles; two for managers and clinicians with licenses, supervision and program history to show.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
