Resume template for coming back from long unemployment
Short answer
Henrietta works for a resume after a long stretch without a permanent job. The summary names the reason in a few words, temporary work since the layoff opens the history so the timeline reaches this month, and education follows straight after, putting a certificate earned during the search high on the page. The fictional sample is a purchasing coordinator 20 months after his plant closed.

Why Henrietta suits an after long unemployment resume
Henrietta prints work experience right after the summary and education right after the jobs. That puts the agency assignments that bring the history up to date in front, and lifts the supply chain certificate finished during the search above the skills grid. Its plain black and grey business look suits purchasing and operations roles.
Second choice: Leslie. Leslie keeps the experience-first order with a touch of blue but prints skills before education; choose it if your new training is a short course rather than a certificate.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Three sentences, three jobs: what you did for years, what happened when it ended (in plain words, with the year), and what you have done since. Closing on the role you want shows the search has a direction.
- Work Experience. Temporary, seasonal and part-time work since the layoff goes at the top, even if it sits below your old level. For agency work, name the agency and the sites you were placed at, so the dates match what an employment check finds.
- Education. A certificate finished during the search leads this section with its completion month. Mention evening or part-time study if that is how you did it; it shows you kept learning while applying.
- Skills. Henrietta prints skills in a grid with no labels, so put the purchasing and inventory methods your target postings name in the first group, then the systems, including any you picked up on temporary assignments.
- Certifications. A practical credential earned on a temp assignment, such as forklift operation, counts. It prints near the end; repeat it in the summary only if the job requires it.
- Volunteer work. Regular volunteering keeps a long search from looking idle, but only if it is ongoing and you can say what you do each week. A single day of helping out is not worth a line.

How to make the sample yours
Bring the timeline up to this month
Readers look at the most recent date first. If your last entry ended a year ago, add what you have done since: agency work, a course, volunteering. Each item with a real start date closes part of the gap.
Say why the job ended in a few words
A plant closure, a site move or a company-wide layoff is a reason readers accept. Put it in the summary or as the last bullet of the job, not both.
Group temp assignments under the agency
Taking work below your old level is evidence that you kept going. List the assignments in one entry under the agency rather than as several short jobs, and name each site in a bullet.
Rewrite the resume every few months
After a long search, the version written in month one is out of date. Update the summary, add new courses and reorder skills to match the postings you are seeing now.

In the US, the Department of Labor's American Job Centers offer job search assistance and job referrals; some services have eligibility requirements, so ask your local center what applies to you.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- purchasing
- inventory control
- cycle counts
- reorder points
- purchase orders
- supplier follow-up
- ERP
- physical inventory
- materials planning
- Excel
- warehouse management system
- available immediately
Mistakes to avoid
- Ending the work history at your last permanent job and leaving the reader to count the months. A dated temporary or volunteer entry is better than silence.
- Listing applications sent or interviews attended. Search activity is not experience; the resume shows work, study and volunteering only.
- Shrinking your old job title to look less expensive. The title must match the employer's records, and the summary already sets your target level.
- A summary that sounds worn down, such as "seeking any opportunity". Naming the role you want reads as a plan.

Frequently asked questions
When does unemployment count as long-term?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts people as long-term unemployed once they have been jobless for 27 weeks or more. Around that point, add a line about what you have done since your last job.
Should I list temp or agency work after a layoff?
Yes. Put it in one entry under the agency name, with the sites you were placed at and the real dates. It shows recent work and keeps the timeline continuous.
How do I explain two years without a full-time job?
With dated entries for what you did in that time and one plain sentence in the summary about why the job ended. Keep the longer story for the interview, and make sure it matches the page.
Does volunteering count while I am unemployed?
It counts when it is regular and you can say what you do, such as weekly delivery shifts or keeping a stockroom in order. Give it dates and a title like any other role.
Should I take the dates off my resume to hide the gap?
No. Application forms and background checks ask for months and years, so missing dates only move the question to a worse moment. Keep the dates and fill the time honestly.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
