Resume template for a military to civilian transition

Short answer

Meridian suits a service member moving into civilian work because it prints translated skills above the job history, so a hiring manager reads "inventory control" and "labor planning" before any rank or unit. The fictional sample is an Army supply sergeant with 12 years of service, finishing a SkillBridge internship at a distribution center and applying for operations supervisor roles.

Why Meridian suits a military transition resume

Meridian prints skills directly under the summary and ahead of work experience, so civilian terms for military work come first and the ranks follow as supporting detail. It uses no colour, which keeps printed copies for hiring fairs and transition workshops sharp on any office printer.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath keeps the same skills-first order with full-width heading rules; it is the closer match if your specialty was technical, such as signals, cyber or IT.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Open with the civilian job you want and your years of service, then two results in everyday language. End with your separation or availability month, because employers hiring veterans plan start dates around it.
  2. Skills. Translate every item. A distribution manager will not know "GCSS-Army", but "SAP-based supply system" tells them you have used enterprise software. Civilian job titles suggested for your occupation code are a good source of the right skill names.
  3. Work Experience. Give each rank its own entry with a plain-language job title first and the rank in brackets. Replace unit names, acronyms and operation names with what the work was: team size, value of equipment, volume handled.
  4. Education. List degrees and college certificates. The Joint Services Transcript, used by the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard, records your military training with ACE college credit recommendations; Air Force training is recorded through the Community College of the Air Force or Air University instead.
  5. Certifications. A civilian credential in your new field shows you already know the industry's standards. It prints near the end, so name it in the headline or summary if postings list it.

How to make the sample yours

Run your job code through My Next Move for Veterans

The US Department of Labor site lets you choose your branch, enter your MOS, rating, AFSC or SFSC, and see civilian careers with similar work. Use the titles it suggests in your headline where they honestly fit.

Give a SkillBridge internship its own entry

SkillBridge lets service members gain civilian work experience through industry training, apprenticeships or internships during their last 180 days of service. List it at the top under the host company; it is civilian experience in the field you want.

Strip out acronyms and unit names

Ask someone who never served to read your bullets. Every term they stop at (NCOIC, CONEX, PBO) needs a plain replacement such as "supervisor", "shipping container" or "property officer".

Bring the draft to the TAP employment workshop

The Transition Assistance Program includes a two-day Department of Labor Employment Workshop with training on writing a resume, plus networking and interviewing. A rough draft gets more out of it than a blank page.

Leave out what a civilian job does not need

Weapons qualifications, deployment locations and classified details rarely help an operations application. Keep an award only if you can say in a few words what it was for.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • logistics
  • inventory control
  • warehouse operations
  • receiving and shipping
  • inventory accuracy
  • team leadership
  • safety compliance
  • labor planning
  • SAP
  • audit readiness
  • distribution center
  • veteran
  • SkillBridge

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using your occupation code and rank as the job title with no civilian equivalent. Lead with what the job would be called outside the military.
  • Copying evaluation report language, which is written for promotion boards, not hiring managers.
  • Underselling leadership. Running a team of 24 and millions of dollars of equipment is supervisor-level work in a distribution center; describe it at that level.
  • Adding your service number, date of birth or other personal details. A resume needs your roles and dates of service, nothing more.

Frequently asked questions

How do I translate my military job into civilian terms?

Start with a crosswalk: My Next Move for Veterans suggests civilian careers with similar work when you choose your branch and enter your MOS, rating or AFSC. Then rewrite each bullet around team size, value, volume and results, using the civilian titles it suggests.

Should I put my rank on a civilian resume?

Yes, after a civilian job title, for example "Supply Operations Supervisor (Sergeant First Class)". The rank shows seniority to readers who know it; the title explains the job to everyone else.

How do I list a SkillBridge internship?

As its own entry at the top of your experience, with the host company, your title there and the dates. Your service can also run to "Present" alongside it, because SkillBridge takes place while you are still serving.

Where can I get help writing my transition resume?

The Transition Assistance Program, run by several federal agencies including the Department of Labor, includes a two-day employment workshop that covers writing a resume. Career services at your installation and veterans' organizations can review drafts as well.

How long should a military transition resume be?

One or two pages. A 12-year career fits on two if each rank gets three or four bullets; early assignments can shrink to a line or two.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
