Resume template for moving from freelance to full-time work

Short answer

Olivia suits a freelancer applying for an in-house job. Its skills row comes before experience, so what clients paid you for is read first, and its blue header band makes the page stand out on screen. Why Olivia suits a freelance to full-time resume

Olivia prints skills straight after the summary, so strategy, SEO and reporting skills built across many clients are read before the reader reaches "self-employed". Its full-width blue header band stands out on screen, which suits a marketing hire whose resume is itself a small piece of content.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie prints experience before skills with only a touch of blue; pick it if one long retainer client is your strongest evidence.

What goes in each section, in Olivia's order

Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Say what you did as a freelancer, for which kind of client, and that you want an in-house role. That last part matters: it tells the reader you are choosing employment, not filling time between contracts.
  2. Skills. List what clients paid you for, not everything you can do. Freelancers often pick up design, video and social work to win jobs; keep only what the in-house posting asks for.
  3. Work Experience. One entry for the freelance business, under your business name or "Self-employed", covers the whole period. Bullets name client types and sizes, your longest relationships and your results; small one-off jobs fit in a single bullet.
  4. Projects. Two or three named pieces of client work give a hiring manager something to open. Describe the client by industry and size if your contract does not let you name them.
  5. Education. Degree and year. A course you took while freelancing, such as analytics or SEO, can go here or in skills; it shows you kept investing in the work without an employer paying for it.

How to make the sample yours

Count clients and your longest relationship

"24 clients over six years, one on retainer for three" shows both range and staying power, the two things an in-house employer wants from a former freelancer.

Describe clients you cannot name

Many freelance contracts limit publicity. "A payroll software company with about 200 employees" gives enough context and keeps you within your agreements.

Show work with teams, not only alone

In-house roles mean meetings, reviews and shared calendars. Bullets about working with a client's sales team, managing other freelancers or reporting to a marketing director show you can work that way.

Add a portfolio link

A short portfolio address in your links lets a hiring manager read the work before the interview. Pick three samples that match the job and put them first on the portfolio page.

Close the freelance entry when you start

Once you accept a job, change "Present" to the end month. Any client you keep on the side should be one your new employer has agreed to.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • content marketing
  • content strategy
  • SEO
  • editorial calendar
  • B2B SaaS

  • lead generation
  • managing freelancers
  • subject matter interviews

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every client as a separate job. Twenty-four short entries look like job hopping; one business entry reads as a career.
  • An agency-style title such as "Founder and Creative Director" for solo work. "Freelance Content Strategist" is accurate and matches the role you want.
  • Leaving out how long clients stayed. Retainers and repeat work are the nearest thing a freelancer has to a performance review.
  • Naming clients or publishing results that your contracts treat as confidential.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put freelance work on a resume for a full-time job?

As one job entry: a title such as Freelance Content Strategist, "Self-employed" or your business name as the employer, and your dates. The bullets cover client types, your longest engagements and results.

Will employers think I will go back to freelancing?

Some may ask. Say in the summary why you want an in-house role, and show long client relationships, which suggest you stay when the work is good.

Should I list my freelance clients by name?

Only if your contracts allow it and the names help. Otherwise describe each client by industry and size; the hiring manager mainly wants the kind of work and its scale.

What if I freelanced and worked part-time at the same time?

List them as separate entries with their real, overlapping dates. Overlap is normal for freelancers and shows how you managed your time.

How do I show freelance results without access to client data?

Use the figures you reported to the client at the time, rounded. If you have none, describe the output and how long the client kept you on.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
