Resume template for job hoppers and short stints

Short answer

FAANGPath suits a resume with several short jobs. It puts your languages and tools above the job list, so a reader sees one consistent skill set before five sets of dates. The fictional sample is a backend engineer with five roles in six years, including a startup that closed, an acquisition and agency contract work grouped into one entry, each move labelled with a short reason.

Why FAANGPath suits a job hopping resume

FAANGPath prints skills before work experience, so the Python, Go and AWS work running through every job reads as one career before the dates do. It is built for technical candidates, and its full-width heading rules keep a long list of employers easy to scan.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has the same skills-first order with no colour; it is the better match outside tech, for example a hospitality or sales history with as many moves.

What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order

FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. One sentence on what stayed constant (the stack, the kind of system), one that names why the moves happened in general terms, and one on what you want next. "Long-term" in the last line only works if the rest of the page makes it believable.
  2. Skills. This is the thread that ties the jobs together. List first the languages and services you used in three or more roles, so a reader sees depth rather than a new tool for every employer.
  3. Work Experience. Add a short reason in parentheses after the company where one exists: "acquired", "startup, closed", "fixed-term contract". Agency or contract work goes under one entry with the client projects as bullets, which turns three short stints into one.
  4. Education. Degree and year are enough. A course or bootcamp taken between jobs can go here with its dates, which also accounts for the month or two between roles.

Backend engineer with six years building APIs and data pipelines in Python and Go on AWS, across logistics, health tech and retail. • Own the shipment events service, which processes about 2 million carrier updates a day through SQS and Lambda.
  • Cut p95 latency on the tracking API from 900 ms to 250 ms by adding a read replica and caching hot routes.
  • Wrote the team's on-call runbook and join the rotation one week in six.

Software Engineer, Tidewell Health (startup, closed 02/2025), Seattle, WA (05/2024 to 02/2025)

  • Built the appointment reminder service in Go, sending about 40,000 texts and emails a week.

How to make the sample yours

Label the moves you did not choose

Layoffs, closures, acquisitions and the planned end of a contract are not job hopping in the usual sense. A two-word note next to the employer lets the reader count only the moves you made yourself.

Merge agency placements into one entry

If an agency placed you with several clients, list the agency once as the employer and give each client a bullet. Freelance contracts under your own name work the same way.

Give short jobs fewer bullets, not longer dates

A nine-month role gets two bullets on what you shipped. Stretching dates to look longer is easy to catch in a background check and can cost you the offer.

Show something finished in every role

Short stays raise the question of whether you see work through. One shipped feature, migration or fix per job answers it better than any line in the summary.

Drop very old, very short roles

A three-month job from ten years ago adds a date without adding evidence. Leave it off the resume, list it on any form that asks for complete history, and be ready to mention it if asked.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • backend development
  • Python
  • Go
  • AWS
  • REST APIs
  • microservices
  • PostgreSQL
  • event-driven architecture
  • Terraform
  • CI/CD
  • system design
  • observability
  • code review
  • on-call

Mistakes to avoid

  • Removing months from your dates to blur short stays. Years-only dates look like hiding, and application forms ask for months anyway.
  • Explaining every departure at length. A two-word note beats a paragraph, and reasons such as a difficult manager belong nowhere on the page.
  • Switching to a functional resume to hide the job list. Readers notice the missing timeline and assume the worst.
  • A summary that promises loyalty ("seeking a company to grow with for years") and nothing else. Say what you want to build instead.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list multiple short-term jobs on a resume?

List each one with real month and year dates, most recent first, and give the short ones two bullets. Group agency placements under one entry, and add a brief reason such as "acquired" where the move was not your choice.

How many short jobs count as job hopping?

There is no fixed number. What a reader reacts to is a run of short stays with no visible reason, so label the ones that have a reason and show a result in each.

Can I leave a short job off my resume?

A resume is a selection, so you can leave off a job of a few months if it adds nothing, especially an old one. Be ready to explain the gap, and never leave it off a form that asks for your full employment history.

How do I explain job hopping in an interview?

Give the honest reason for each move in a sentence, point to what you finished in each role, and say what you want from the next one. Keep it consistent with the notes on the resume.

Should contract work be listed under the agency or the client?

Under the agency if it placed and paid you, with the clients as bullets. If you contracted directly, list yourself as self-employed and name the clients in the bullets.

Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 10 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
