Resume template for a portfolio career

Short answer

Leslie handles a portfolio career well: the summary names the thread that connects your roles, and the work history follows directly, with each concurrent role marked "Present" and its weekly pattern in the title. The fictional sample is a UK HR professional combining a three-day charity post, a freelance HR practice and evening teaching, applying for one more two-day role.

Why Leslie suits a portfolio career resume

Leslie prints work experience straight after the summary, so three roles running at the same time are the first thing a reader meets, with the summary above explaining how they fit. The centred blue header adds one touch of colour to an otherwise plain page that suits HR, charity and education employers.

Second choice: Daniel. Daniel prints skills before experience, which helps when the thread across your roles is a skill set rather than one job title.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. This is where a portfolio career makes sense to a reader. Name the thread that ties the roles together (here, HR for small and not-for-profit employers), list the roles in a phrase, and say how much of your week you are offering.
  2. Work Experience. Each concurrent role gets its own entry ending "Present", with its weekly pattern in the title ("part-time, 3 days a week"). Put the most relevant one first, then the earlier full-time job that built your experience.
  3. Skills. Choose skills that run through every role instead of listing each role's tools separately. The reader should see one professional, not three part-timers.
  4. Education. Degree, university and year on one line.
  5. Certifications. Membership of a professional body is the clearest single proof of standing when your work is split across employers. It prints near the end, so the summary mentions it as well.
  6. Board and trustee roles. Trustee and board roles are often part of a portfolio. Give the organisation, your committee or responsibility and the dates, in one line each.

How to make the sample yours

Name the thread first

Before writing bullets, finish the sentence "All my roles are about..." and put the answer in the first line of the summary.

State weekly patterns honestly

Write the days or hours a week for each part-time role. An employer hiring you for two days needs to see that your other commitments leave room for them.

Trim roles that do not support the application

A portfolio can include work unrelated to the job, such as weekend retail. Keep it to a one-line entry, or leave it off if the timeline is already full.

Expect the conflict-of-interest question

If your roles overlap (a freelance client could compete with the employer), decide how you would handle it. An employer may ask about your other work before making an offer.

Going back to one full-time job?

Say in the summary that you would wind the portfolio down, move the most relevant role to the top, and cut the others to two bullets each.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • portfolio career
  • part-time
  • HR business partner
  • employee relations
  • policy development
  • workplace investigations
  • absence management
  • pay benchmarking
  • HR consultancy
  • Chartered MCIPD
  • trustee
  • coaching managers

Mistakes to avoid

  • Merging every role into one vague "Consultant" entry, so the reader cannot see who you work for or how much.
  • Leaving the weekly pattern out, which leads a reader to assume you are over-committed.
  • A summary that lists the roles without saying what connects them.
  • Using a label such as "portfolio careerist" in the headline. Use the professional title the employer is hiring for.

Frequently asked questions

What is a portfolio career?

Working several part-time, freelance or board roles at the same time instead of one full-time job. The roles often share a theme, such as one profession practised for different kinds of organisation.

How do I show several jobs at once on a resume?

Give each one its own entry with "Present" as the end date and its weekly pattern in the title. The summary explains how they fit together.

Should freelance work sit alongside employed roles?

Yes, as its own entry under your trading name or "Self-employed", with the kind of clients you serve and the work you do for them.

Do trustee and board roles count?

Yes. They are unpaid but show governance experience and judgment. List them in their own section with the organisation, your responsibility and the dates.

Will an employer read a portfolio career as a lack of commitment?

Some might. A clear thread in the summary and honest weekly patterns show that the mix is planned and that you have time for the role you are applying for.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 10 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
