Resume template for contractors and consultants

Short answer

FAANGPath suits a technical contractor: the stack prints above the jobs, so a recruiter matching a contract brief can check Snowflake, dbt and Airflow in seconds, and each contract follows with its agency and client named. The fictional sample is a data engineer with two contracts after a permanent job, one through an agency and one through her own company. Consultants can follow the same pattern.

Why FAANGPath suits a contract work resume

FAANGPath prints skills directly under the summary and before work experience, so the tools a contract brief asks for are read first. It is a minimal, centred black and grey layout built for technical candidates, and labelled contract entries with client names read cleanly in it.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has the same skills-first order with heading rules running to the right; it is a neutral choice for non-technical contractors such as interim finance or project managers.

What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order

FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. State that you work on contract, your specialism and how long you have done it, then your availability date. Contract roles are filled against start dates, so "available from 01/2027" is useful information, not filler.
  2. Skills. Match the stack in the contract brief, using the same product names where they are true for you. Contracts are usually scoped to specific tools, and this row is where a recruiter checks them.
  3. Work Experience. One entry per contract, with "(contract)" in the title. For agency placements, name the agency and the client so your dates match what a background check shows; for work through your own company, name the company and the client.
  4. Education. Degree and year on one line. A contractor is judged on the contracts, so this entry stays small.
  5. Certifications. Vendor certifications carry extra weight for contractors, because a client hiring for a few months wants proof before day one. Give the exact name and the year.

How to make the sample yours

Show extensions and renewals

A contract that was extended or renewed is the closest thing a contractor has to a reference on the page. Say so in a bullet, with the original term.

Group very short engagements

Several jobs of a few weeks each can sit under one entry ("Independent consultant, 2022 to 2023") with a bullet per client, so the page does not look like constant moving.

Write what you delivered, not what you were hired to do

The contract brief describes the plan. Your bullets describe the finished result: what moved, what got faster, what the client's own team now runs.

Check what you may say about each client

Contracts often include confidentiality terms. If you cannot name the client, describe it by industry and size ("a regional credit union").

Consultants: keep the firm, list the engagements

If you work for a consulting firm, the firm stays as the employer and two or three client engagements go under it as bullets, each with the problem and the result.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • contract
  • data engineering
  • Snowflake

  • Airflow
  • Python
  • SQL
  • data migration
  • ETL pipelines

  • stakeholder management
  • fixed-term
  • consulting

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing only the agency as the employer, with no client. The reader cannot tell what the work was or where it happened.
  • Leaving "(contract)" out of the title, so a run of 12-month roles looks like a habit of leaving jobs.
  • Stretching dates to hide gaps between contracts. A month or two between contracts is normal and needs no explanation.
  • Pasting the client's project brief in as your bullets. Write what you finished.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list contract work on a resume?

One entry per contract, with "(contract)" after the job title, the agency or your company plus the client, and month-and-year dates. Bullets describe what you delivered on that contract.

Should I name the staffing agency or the client company?

Both. Write the agency as the employer and the client as the assignment ("assigned to"), because the agency employed you and its records hold your dates.

How do I keep contract work from looking like job-hopping?

Label each role as a contract, mention extensions and group very short engagements under one heading. Most readers understand that a contract ends by design.

How should consultants show client work?

Keep the consulting firm as the employer and list two or three engagements under it, each with the client type, the problem and a measurable result. Independent consultants do the same under their own company name.

Can a contractor resume work for a permanent job?

Yes. Say in the summary that you want a permanent role, and pick bullets about documentation, handover and training that show you leave teams better off.

Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
