Resume template for relocating to a new city
Short answer
Leslie works well for a resume sent ahead of a move. Its centred blue header carries the "Relocating to" line where every reader looks first, and work experience follows the summary straight away. The fictional sample is a logistics coordinator in Columbus, Ohio, moving to Portland, Oregon in February 2027, with the move date and interview availability stated up front.

Why Leslie suits a relocating resume
Leslie sets the name, contact line and job title in blue in a centred header, so the location slot, which here reads "Relocating to Portland, OR (02/2027)", is part of the most visible block on the page. Experience prints before skills, which suits a coordinator whose freight work is the case for hiring.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has a similar centred header in black and grey and puts skills ahead of experience, better if your systems knowledge matters more than your employers to the new market.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Repeat the move in the summary: the city, the month and when you can interview in person. A recruiter weighing an out-of-state applicant needs those three facts, and they cost one sentence.
- Work Experience. Write bullets that travel: load volumes, carrier counts, systems. Local employers the new city will not know need a few words of context, such as "a regional distributor serving 300 grocery stores".
- Skills. Lead with the systems and methods that postings in the new market name. If their jobs ask for a different WMS or ERP, list the one you know well and stop there; do not claim the local favourite.
- Education. A local community college is fine as it is. Add the state if the school name does not make it obvious, since a reader two time zones away may not recognise it.

How to make the sample yours
Choose the location line that is true
If you have a lease or a start date, write "Relocating to Portland, OR (02/2027)". If the move depends on the job, "Open to relocating to Portland, OR" is honest. A local address you do not live at yet can unravel at the first interview.
Keep a phone number that works across the move
Hold on to your mobile number if you can; an old area code is fine. Set up voicemail, because recruiters in another time zone will often call while you are at work.
Learn the new market's job titles
Read ten postings from the new city and adjust the headline and skills to match. Employers there may say "transportation planner" for the job your current company calls "logistics coordinator".
Check licenses early if your work needs one
A Bureau of Labor Statistics study notes that state licensing regulations frequently differ from one state to another. If your job is licensed, check the new state's board before applying and say in the summary where your application stands.
Leave moving costs for later
Relocation packages and moving help do not belong on the resume. Raise them once an employer shows interest; the page only needs to say when and where you can start.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid
- Borrowing a friend's address in the new city to look local. Payroll forms, background checks and the first in-person interview will show where you live.
- Leaving your location off entirely. A header with no city leaves the reader guessing, and local roles get filled with people who answered that question.
- Explaining the reason for the move (a partner's job, family, cost of living) in the summary. The reason can wait; the date cannot.
- Forgetting time zones. "Available for calls 9 to 5" is unclear when you are three hours ahead; add the zone.

Frequently asked questions
How do I show I am relocating on my resume?
Put "Relocating to" with the city, state and month in the location part of your header, then repeat the city and date in the summary. If the move is not fixed, write "Open to relocating to" and the city instead.
Should I use a local address if I am moving?
Not one you do not live at yet. Use the relocation line, with your current city in the summary, and switch the header to the new city once you have moved.
Should I explain why I am relocating?
Not on the resume. If it helps, one sentence in the cover letter is enough, such as "moving to be closer to family". The resume only needs the city and the date.
Should I apply before I move or after?
Before, if you can give a firm date within a few months, which leaves time for video interviews. If the move is a year away, wait: a posting open today will usually be filled long before you arrive.
How do I handle interviews from another state?
Offer video for the first rounds and give the dates you will be in the new city. Writing the in-person date in the summary lets a recruiter plan the final interview without asking.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
