Resume template for an international job application
Short answer
Henrietta suits an application to an employer in another country. Its conventional black and grey layout reads as standard business format, and it prints your degree right after your jobs, where a foreign reader checks how your training compares. The fictional sample is a mechanical design engineer in Pune applying for UK roles, with visa status, notice period and languages stated plainly.

Why Henrietta suits an applying abroad resume
Henrietta is a conventional business layout with no colour and education printed straight after experience. Abroad, the reader often has to place an unfamiliar degree, so having it directly under the jobs it led to helps, and the left-aligned header has room for a full international phone number and the city and country.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian is just as plain and puts skills above experience, useful when your tools (CATIA, NX, ANSYS) are the common language between you and the employer.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Name the target country and your work status there: citizen, permit holder, or "would need visa sponsorship". Add your notice period, since an employer abroad has to plan a start date around it and around any visa process.
- Work Experience. Give each employer a few words of context (what it makes, who it supplies), because local company names mean nothing abroad. Cross-border work, such as design reviews with overseas customers or reports written in English, is the most persuasive evidence on this page.
- Education. Write the degree in full with its length, and put your result in words a reader abroad can place, such as "First Class with Distinction", rather than a percentage alone. If an employer asks for an equivalence, ENIC-NARIC centres give information on how foreign qualifications are recognised.
- Skills. Use the international names of tools and standards (CATIA V5, ASME Y14.5) instead of in-house terms. Languages go here with a level, such as "German (A2)" on the CEFR scale, so the reader does not have to guess what "basic" means.
- International experience. Time spent working abroad, even a few weeks on a customer site, deserves its own short list. It answers the unspoken question of whether you can work in another country's offices.

How to make the sample yours
State your right to work in plain words
GOV.UK says employers must check that an applicant is allowed to work in the UK before employing them, so the question will come up. "Requires Skilled Worker visa sponsorship" or "Right to work in the UK, no sponsorship needed" saves a round of emails.
Keep one version per target country
Personal details, photos and length expectations change between countries. If you apply in the UK and Germany, keep two files; none of the seven templates prints a photo, so read the German guide before sending a Lebenslauf.
Write the phone number in international form
Include the country code (+91 for India) and drop the leading zero of the local code. Mention your time zone in the cover letter so interviewers can suggest a sensible slot.
Call the document what the ad calls it
If a UK posting asks for a CV, name your file and your email attachment that way. The layout and content stay the same.
Turn local abbreviations into full words
B.E., CGPA, Pvt. Ltd. and internal grade names may be unclear abroad. Spell out the degree, convert or describe your grades, and give the company a one-line description.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid
- Copying home-country habits without checking. A date of birth, a photo or family details that are normal at home may be out of place where you are applying.
- Leaving your work status for the interview. A reader who cannot tell whether you need sponsorship may simply move on to the next application.
- Salary in your home currency, or any salary at all. Research the target market's range before the first call instead.
- An unexplained grading scale ("8.6 CGPA") or exam board that a foreign reader has no way to judge.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need visa sponsorship to apply for jobs abroad?
It depends on the country and your nationality. For the UK Skilled Worker visa, GOV.UK says you need a confirmed job offer from a Home Office approved employer and a certificate of sponsorship, so target employers who sponsor and say on the resume that you need it.
Should an international resume include a photo or date of birth?
Only where it is expected. England's National Careers Service says not to include your age, date of birth, marital status or nationality, while EURES says a photo remains part of a job application in Germany. Check the target country first.
How long should a CV for a job abroad be?
One to two pages covers most English-language applications, and EURES says a German CV should not be more than two pages. Cut older roles before you cut cross-border work.
Should I translate my resume into the local language?
Follow the posting: if it is written in English, apply in English; if it is in the local language, send a translated version or ask. Have a native speaker check any translation, since clumsy wording undercuts a language skill you claim.
What is a Europass CV and do I need one?
Europass is the European Union's online CV builder; its site calls it one of the best-known CV formats in Europe and offers it in 31 languages. Use it when a European employer or programme asks for it.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
