Simple resume template: a clean, uncluttered sample

Short answer

Meridian is the simplest of Resumity's seven templates: black and grey only, a centred header, a thin rule beside each heading and one column. The fictional sample is a dental office coordinator whose whole career fits on one uncluttered page with room around every section. Simple means fewer words as much as a plain design, so she keeps two short jobs with three bullets each.

Why Meridian suits a simple resume

Meridian is the template the editor opens with: a centred name, one contact line, small-capital headings each followed by a thin grey rule, and no colour at all. Nothing on the page competes with the words, and it photocopies cleanly if a practice manager prints your application for the dentist to read.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta is just as plain in black and grey, with a left-aligned name and education printed straight after experience; better if a training certificate is central to the job.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Two sentences at most. A clean page earns its white space by saying what you do and where, then stopping; there is nothing here a reader has to decode.
  2. Skills. Three short rows with a few items each. Meridian labels them for you (Technical, Tools, Soft Skills), so there is no need for extra sorting. Delete anything this particular job never mentions.
  3. Work Experience. Two or three bullets per job is plenty in this style. Keep the ones a hiring manager in your field would ask about and let the weaker ones go, rather than shrinking the type to fit them.
  4. Education. One line per qualification: what it is and where you earned it. A short certificate program counts and fits the same single line.

How to make the sample yours

Cut before you shrink

If the page runs long, remove the weakest bullet from each job before you touch margins or font size. Small type defeats the point of a clean layout.

One action per bullet

A line like "Schedule about 45 visits a day" reads in a second. Duties strung together with "and" turn a simple page dense again.

Leave out sections you cannot fill

The sample has no projects or certifications because the coordinator has none worth listing. Meridian only prints sections that have content, so empty ones simply disappear.

Swap the office details for yours

Replace Dentrix with your own scheduling or practice software, and the insurance checks with whatever your desk handles most: billing, referrals, intake forms.

Let the page end early

If your content stops two thirds of the way down, that is fine. Do not fill the gap with hobbies or a references line; the spare room is part of the clean look.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • patient scheduling
  • insurance verification
  • front desk
  • patient check-in
  • patient records
  • Dentrix
  • appointment reminders
  • multi-line phones
  • billing
  • treatment cost estimates
  • customer service
  • bilingual

Mistakes to avoid

  • Squeezing margins and type to fit a third job onto the page. A cramped page stops looking simple, whatever the template.
  • A summary made of adjectives ("dedicated, motivated, detail-oriented professional"). Three adjectives in a row are clutter.
  • Repeating the same duty under both jobs. Say it once, in the stronger entry, and give the other entry something different.
  • A full street address or a "references available" line. City and state are enough.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a resume template simple?

One column, a plain typeface, no decoration and sections in the order readers expect. The content matters just as much: short bullets, no filler sections and visible space between entries.

Is a simple resume too plain to stand out?

What stands out is the content, not the frame. A page that reads in seconds lets a hiring manager spot the detail that fits their opening, such as the insurance checks in the sample.

How much white space should a resume have?

Enough that each job reads as its own block at a glance. If you find yourself adjusting margins to fit everything, the content is too long; cut a bullet or an older job instead.

Should a simple resume still have a summary?

A short one helps, especially when a job title alone does not say what you do. Two sentences are enough. Leave it off only if your latest title tells the whole story.

Can a simple resume run to two pages?

It can if you have the experience to fill both, but most people choosing this style have one page of material. Two half-empty pages look less tidy than one full one.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 6 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
