Account Manager Resume Example and Writing Guide
Short answer
An account manager resume should show the book you manage and what happened to it: number of accounts, annual revenue, retention or renewal rate, and growth from upsells. Open with a summary naming your industry and account size, add bullets with those numbers, then list CRM tools such as Salesforce, skills and education.

What numbers belong on an account manager resume?
Hiring managers read an account manager resume for the size of your book and what you did with it. Give the number of accounts, their total revenue (annual recurring revenue for software, annual sales for distribution or agencies) and the segment, such as small business, mid-market or enterprise.
Then show results the way your company measured them. Software teams track gross revenue retention (renewals minus churn and downgrades) and net revenue retention (which also counts expansion); sales organizations track quota attainment and growth. Use the metric your target employer uses, and be ready to explain how it was calculated.
- Book: "42 mid-market accounts, $6.1M ARR"
- Retention: "94% gross revenue retention" or "renewed 37 of 40 contracts"
- Growth: "112% of upsell quota" or "grew the book 18% net"
- Activity: "30 QBRs a year with VP-level buyers"
Account manager vs account executive: how do the resumes differ?
In most companies an account executive wins new customers and an account manager keeps and grows existing ones. An account executive resume leads with new revenue, pipeline and win rates; an account manager resume leads with retention, renewals, expansion and relationships.
Titles vary, so read the posting. Some agencies and distributors call their new-business sellers "account managers," and some software companies split the work into customer success (adoption) and account management (commercial). Mirror the posting's focus in your summary and the first bullet of each job.
Which keywords should an account manager resume include?
Most postings repeat a small set of terms: account management, client relationships, renewals, upselling, cross-selling, retention, quota, forecasting, CRM and quarterly business reviews. Use the ones that are true for you, in the employer's wording, and add the tools named in the posting such as Salesforce, HubSpot or Gainsight.
Industry vocabulary matters too. Software roles use ARR, churn and expansion; agencies use scope, retainers and deliverables; distribution and consumer goods roles use share of wallet, line reviews and trade promotions. Using those words shows you already speak the customer's language.
How should a senior account manager resume look different?
Senior and key account manager resumes are judged on account size, executive access and strategy. Lead with your largest accounts and their value, show the account plans and joint business plans you built, and name the level of buyers you work with.
Show leadership even without direct reports: mentoring new account managers, owning a vertical or coordinating supply chain, product and finance for a key customer. SAMA runs the Certified Strategic Account Manager (CSAM) program for people who already manage strategic accounts, which can support a move into a key account role.
Account manager resume length
One page for up to about 7 years of experience, two pages for senior and key account managers with several roles and large accounts. Put your book size and best retention or growth result in the summary so they appear in the first lines.

Mistakes to avoid on an account manager resume
- No book size. Without the number of accounts and their revenue, a reader cannot judge your scope.
- Copying the job description. "Responsible for client relationships" adds nothing; show renewals, saves and growth.
- Mixing new and existing revenue. Label new logos, renewals and expansion separately so the hiring manager sees what you drove.
- Sharing confidential client data. Name industries and account sizes, not clients under NDA or exact contract terms.
- One generic resume for every industry. Rewrite the summary and keywords for software, agency, distribution or consumer goods roles.
Frequently asked questions
What should an account manager put on a resume?
The number of accounts you manage and their revenue, your retention or renewal rate, upsell and growth results, the CRM and tools you use, and the industries and buyer levels you work with. Add education and any sales certification at the end.
What keywords should be on an account manager resume?
Account management, client relationships, renewals, retention, upselling, cross-selling, quota attainment, forecasting, quarterly business reviews and the CRM named in the posting, such as Salesforce or HubSpot. Use the employer's wording and back each keyword with a result.
How do you write a senior account manager resume?
Lead with your largest accounts and their value, then show strategic work: account plans, executive relationships, multi-year renewals and expansion. Add mentoring or cross-team leadership and keep it to two pages.
What is the difference between an account manager and an account executive?
An account executive usually wins new customers, while an account manager retains and grows existing ones. Titles vary by company, so match your resume to the focus of each posting.
How do I become an account manager with no experience?
Start from customer-facing roles such as account coordinator, customer support, inside sales or retail management. Highlight renewals, upsells, complaint resolution and relationships you kept, and add a free course such as HubSpot Academy's Inbound Sales certification.
Should an account manager resume be one page?
One page works for most account managers with up to about 7 years of experience. Senior and key account managers can use two pages if every line shows scope or results.
Which certifications help an account manager?
None is required. SAMA's Certified Strategic Account Manager (CSAM) program suits experienced strategic account managers, and HubSpot Academy's free Inbound Sales Certification is an easy start for newer account managers.
