AI in Job Search and Hiring Statistics 2026

Where independent research or a government audit exists we put it next to the vendor surveys, and we flag the claims that circulate without any study behind them.

Which popular numbers have no real source?
"Recruiters automatically reject resumes written with AI."
A minority say they would, and most could not tell in a test.

"Every resume is now screened by AI before a human sees it."
Not according to hiring managers themselves.
In the same May 2025 survey, 19.2% of US hiring managers said they use AI for resume screening and 37.5% said they use no AI tools in hiring. AI interviews are spreading fast (63% of US job seekers had one in a May 2026 Greenhouse survey), but that is a different step from resume screening. (TopResume)
"A polished AI-written application will make you stand out."
Not once everyone has one: the research points the other way.
On Freelancer.com, employers paid more for workers whose applications were tailored to the job before LLM tools arrived, but that premium disappeared afterwards (Galdin and Silbert, November 2025). Their model suggests this makes hiring less meritocratic; the paper has not yet been peer reviewed. (arXiv (Galdin and Silbert, Princeton))
