Campus placement resume: format, rules and a sample

On-campus placement resumes are read differently from off-campus ones. The placement cell often collects resumes in one format, companies shortlist against criteria such as branch, CGPA and backlogs, and the interviewer may hold your one-page resume through the whole conversation. Here are the rules that usually apply, how to write projects and internships, and a sample for an engineering student.

How on-campus shortlisting usually works

  1. The company sends the placement cell a job description and eligibility criteria: branches, minimum CGPA or percentage in Class X, Class XII and the degree, and whether active backlogs are allowed.
  2. The cell announces the drive and you register, usually with a resume in the college’s format.
  3. Eligible students take an online test or a group discussion.
  4. Technical and HR interviewers ask questions straight from your resume: every project, internship and skill is fair game.

Details vary by college and company. Where your placement cell has a rule, it wins over anything here.

Rules that usually apply

  • Use the college template if there is one. Fill it well rather than redesigning it.
  • One page. Placement resumes are almost always one page.
  • Education first, with the semester: “CGPA 8.4/10 (up to 6th semester)”. Then Class XII and Class X, each with board, year and score as on the marksheet.
  • Backlogs: answer the question in the registration form truthfully. Marksheets are checked at some point, and a mismatch costs more than the backlog.
  • Two or three projects, major or final-year project first, each with your own part spelled out.
  • Internships with dates and what you built or changed.
  • Only skills you can be interviewed on. Interviewers pick topics from this list.
  • Achievements and positions of responsibility: contests, hackathons, clubs, NSS or NCC, sports. One line each.
  • No photo unless the college template has a box for it.

Write a project the way an interviewer reads it

Before

“Made a website for attendance using React and Firebase.”

After

“Teachers in three sections (about 180 students) mark attendance from a phone and export monthly reports to Excel. I built the login, the roster screens and the export.”

The pattern: what it does, for whom, your part, the tools and what happened. Use a number only when you know it, and say where it came from if it is not obvious (the sample cites the bot’s own logs).

Sample campus placement resume

A final-year computer science student registering for on-campus software drives. Education leads, the internship sits under Experience, and both projects say exactly what he built.

  • Finalist, college 24-hour hackathon (2025), team of four.

Fictional candidate. The name, institutions, company, phone number and email are invented for this example.

Common mistakes

  • A CGPA with no scale or semester.
  • Every course from the syllabus listed under Skills.
  • A project copied from a senior or a tutorial, which falls apart at the first follow-up question.
  • Two pages, or a second column squeezed in to avoid cutting anything.
  • “Hobbies: watching movies, listening to music” taking space a project could use.

Check your resume

Free, no sign-up. Choose your resume PDF and the check reads it in your browser; the file is not uploaded. It shows whether your text, your Education, Experience and Skills headings, and your name, email and phone can be read, with a ranked list of fixes.

If your college collects resumes as PDFs, check that yours can be read as text before the drive.

Questions

Should I mention backlogs on my resume?

You do not need a line about them on the resume, but answer the backlog question on any registration or application form truthfully, and list cleared backlogs if a form asks.

Can a campus placement resume be two pages?

Rarely. Most placement cells and recruiters expect one page from students. Cut older school activities and long skill lists first.

My CGPA is below a company’s cut-off. What can I do?

Eligibility rules are applied before anyone reads the resume, so a better resume will not get you past them. Apply to drives you are eligible for, and apply off-campus too, where strong projects and internships carry more weight.
