What format should a CFO resume use?
Use a two-page, reverse-chronological format: a short executive summary, a few career highlights, then each role with a one-line scope statement under the title covering revenue, ownership, headcount and the functions you led. Board members and executive recruiters read for scope first, then results.
Keep the layout plain. A single-column template with standard headings survives recruiter databases and applicant tracking systems, and executive recruiters often ask for a Word file, so keep a DOCX version of the same resume ready. Put board seats, audit committee work and advisory roles in their own section.
How do you show scope and ownership type on a CFO resume?
A CFO job at a $90M venture-backed company and one at a $2B public company call for different evidence, so say which you have done. Name the ownership type (public, private equity-backed, venture-backed, family-owned or nonprofit), revenue, number of entities or countries, and the size of your team.
Then match your results to that setting. PE-backed boards care about EBITDA, covenants, 13-week cash forecasts and exits. Venture boards care about burn, runway and fundraising. Public companies care about guidance accuracy, SEC filings, SOX certifications and investor relations.
- Public company: earnings calls, 10-K and 10-Q filings, SOX 302 certification, guidance
- Private equity-backed: lender reporting, covenants, add-on acquisitions, exit readiness
- Venture-backed: fundraising rounds, burn and runway, board decks, unit economics
- Nonprofit: audits, grant compliance, Form 990, board finance committee
Which achievements matter most on a chief financial officer resume?
Lead with outcomes that changed the company's financial position: capital raised or refinanced, margin and cash improvements, acquisitions closed and integrated, and a sale or IPO you prepared. Give the dollar amount and the time it took, and say what you personally did, since CEOs and sponsors share credit for most of these.
Control and reporting results count too, because the CFO is accountable for the numbers. At public companies the principal financial officer personally certifies the quarterly and annual reports, so clean audits, a faster close, fixed control weaknesses and accurate forecasts all show a board it can rely on your reporting.
How should a controller or VP of finance write a resume for a first CFO role?
Show the CFO work you already do. If you own the board deck, the lender relationship, the budget or a financing process, put those first, even if your title says controller. Recruiters screening first-time CFOs look for exposure to capital, the board and strategy, not only accounting excellence.
Fill gaps on purpose. A controller who has never presented to investors can point to an acquisition they supported or an operating plan they built with the CEO. Keep accounting detail short and move strategic work higher on the page.

Mistakes to avoid on a CFO resume
- Writing a controller resume with a CFO title. Pages of close and reconciliation detail hide the strategic work boards hire a CFO for.
- Leaving out company scale. Results mean little without revenue, ownership type and team size beside them.
- Taking credit for the whole deal. Say what you led in a financing or acquisition; sponsors and CEOs know who did what.
- Printing confidential figures. For private companies, use ranges or percentages when exact revenue or deal terms are confidential.
- A three-page career history. Compress roles more than 15 years old to a line each so the last decade fits on two pages.
Frequently asked questions
What should a CFO resume include?
An executive summary with company size, industry and ownership type, career highlights, roles with scope statements and dollar results, board and investor work, your CPA or other credentials, and the ERP and planning systems you have run. Two pages is standard.
How long should a chief financial officer resume be?
Two pages for most CFOs. Put scope and your strongest results on page one, and shorten roles older than about 15 years to a line each.
Do CFOs need a CPA?
It is not required, but many CFOs hold one, and boards often prefer it when the role owns audit and external reporting. A CFA, CMA or MBA can matter more in capital markets or operating finance roles.
What is the best CFO resume template?
A plain single-column template with standard headings: summary, career highlights, experience, board roles, education and certifications. Keep a Word version as well, because executive recruiters often ask for a DOCX file.
How much do CFOs make?
The BLS groups CFOs with chief executives, who had a median pay of $213,990 per year in May 2025. CFO pay varies widely with company size, ownership and equity, so check executive search data for specific offers.
Should a CFO resume have an objective?
Usually not. Use a 3 to 4 line executive summary instead. A short objective only helps when you are changing direction, such as a banker or controller targeting a first CFO role.
