India Job Market and Hiring Statistics 2026

Hiring-platform and employer-survey figures are labelled as such, with their sample and dates.

What is India's unemployment rate in 2026?

What is India's latest monthly unemployment rate?

India's unemployment rate for people aged 15 and over was 5.0% in August 2026, down from 5.1% in July, on the PLFS weekly measure.

This is the Current Weekly Status (CWS) measure: a person counts as unemployed if they did not work even one hour in the past seven days but looked for or were available for work. The monthly series started in April 2025, is not seasonally adjusted, and should not be compared with the older annual usual-status rate.

Primary source: National Statistics Office, MoSPI, Government of India, Press Note on Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) Monthly Bulletin, August 2026 (15 September 2026 (survey month August 2026)). Household survey, rotational panel; in August 2026 89,157 households and 3,70,160 persons were surveyed across 7,496 villages and urban blocks. Current Weekly Status (7-day reference period), all-India, persons aged 15 and over. Not seasonally adjusted.

Is unemployment higher in cities or villages?

Urban unemployment was 6.8% in August 2026, against 4.1% in rural areas, for people aged 15 and over.

Rural unemployment was the lowest since January 2026; urban unemployment was almost unchanged from 6.7% in July. Urban women had the highest rate of the four sex-by-sector groups, at 8.9%.

What is the youth unemployment rate in India?

Unemployment among 15 to 29 year olds was 15.1% in August 2026, three times the 5.0% rate for all adults.

By sex, the youth rate was 13.9% for young men and 18.5% for young women. It is a single-month weekly-status figure from the PLFS monthly bulletin, so compare it with the quarterly figure below before reading a trend into it.

Primary source: National Statistics Office, MoSPI, Government of India, Monthly Bulletin, Periodic Labour Force Survey, August 2026 (September 2026 (survey month August 2026)). Same survey as the press note, with tables by age group (15-29, 15+, all ages), sex and sector. Current Weekly Status. 89,157 households and 3,70,160 persons surveyed in August 2026.

Is youth unemployment rising or falling?

Youth unemployment rose to 15.9% in April to June 2026, up from 15.0% in January to March 2026 and 14.6% a year earlier.

The same quarter put unemployment among women aged 15 to 29 at 19.6%, the highest in the five quarters the new survey has published, and the overall 15+ rate at 5.4%, level with the highest of those five quarters. The quarterly estimate pools about 5.6 lakh people surveyed over three months, so it is steadier than any single month.

Primary source: National Statistics Office, MoSPI, Government of India, Quarterly Bulletin, Periodic Labour Force Survey, April - June 2026 (10 August 2026 (quarter April-June 2026)). Current Weekly Status, all-India, rural and urban.

What was the unemployment rate for the whole of 2025?

India's annual unemployment rate for people aged 15 and over was 3.1% in calendar year 2025, for both men and women.

This uses usual status (ps+ss), which looks back over 365 days and counts someone as employed if they worked for at least 30 days of that year, so it runs well below the weekly measure. 2025 is the first PLFS annual report on a January to December basis; earlier reports covered July to June.

First annual report on a January-December basis.

What was youth unemployment for the whole of 2025?

Unemployment among 15 to 29 year olds was 9.9% in 2025 on the annual measure, down from 10.3% in 2024, and 13.6% among urban youth.

Rural youth unemployment fell from 8.7% to 8.3% and urban youth unemployment from 14.3% to 13.6% between 2024 and 2025. These are usual-status figures and are lower than the monthly weekly-status youth rates above.

Are educated people more likely to be unemployed in India?

Unemployment among people with secondary education or more was 6.5% in 2025, twice the 3.1% rate for all adults, and down from 7.0% in 2024.

MoSPI's press note groups everyone from secondary school to postgraduate together and does not publish a separate graduate-only rate in the release. Graduate-only figures that circulate online come from private analyses of the survey data and use different age groups, so check the age band before quoting one.

How many young Indians are not in work, education or training?

One in four people aged 15 to 29 (25.0%) were not in employment, education or training in India in 2025.

For the narrower 15 to 24 age group the NEET share was 21.0%. NEET includes people who are not looking for work, such as many young women doing unpaid home duties, so it is a wider measure than unemployment.

What share of Indian workers have a salaried job?

Only 23.6% of Indian workers were in regular wage or salaried employment in 2025, up from 22.4% in 2024.

Most Indian workers are self-employed (56.2% in 2025) or casual labourers, so a salaried job with a resume-based hiring process is the minority path. PLFS estimates 61.6 crore people aged 15 and over were employed on average during 2025.

Why did hiring jump in August 2026 and then slow?

The JobSpeak Index rose 14% year on year in August 2026 (3,028 against 2,664), before growth slowed to 2% in September.

Naukri attributed part of the August jump to the festive calendar: more of the festive period fell in August in 2025 and in September in 2026, which flatters August and depresses September. Read the two months together rather than either alone.

Vendor survey: Naukri.com (Info Edge India Ltd), Naukri JobSpeak: White-collar hiring grows 14% in Aug; fresher hiring & AI roles lead (7 September 2026 release, posted 11 September 2026 (data for August 2026)). Which popular numbers have no real source?

"India's unemployment rate is 3.1%, so jobs are not a problem."

Real number, wrong measure for the question.

3.1% is the 2025 annual usual-status rate, which counts someone as employed if they worked for at least 30 days of the year. The weekly measure for August 2026 is 5.0%, youth unemployment on the same measure is 15.1%, and one in four 15 to 29 year olds is not in work, education or training. (National Statistics Office, MoSPI, Government of India)

"42% of Indian graduates are unemployed."

Old and narrow: it was graduates under 25, in 2021-22.

Azim Premji University's State of Working India 2023 found unemployment touched 42% for graduates under 25 and stayed above 15% for graduates overall, using survey data for 2021-22. It describes recent graduates at the start of a search, not all graduates, and it predates the redesigned PLFS. (Azim Premji University, Centre for Sustainable Employment)

"Only about half of Indian graduates are employable."

A test-score threshold, not a job outcome.

The India Skills Report's 56.35% is the share of opt-in test-takers who cleared an employability cut-off on one vendor's test. It says nothing about who gets hired, and the test-takers are not a random sample of graduates. (Careers360 (reporting the India Skills Report 2026 by ETS with CII, AICTE, AIU and Taggd))
