Staff and principal resume template
Short answer
FAANGPath suits a staff or principal engineer: the summary states your scope across teams, the skills block covers the systems you shape, and a projects section after the jobs holds cross-team programs that outgrew any one role. The fictional sample is a staff software engineer on a payments platform, with a standard adopted by eleven teams, an architecture review she leads and senior engineers she mentors.

Why FAANGPath suits a staff and principal resume
FAANGPath is built for technical candidates: centred, black and grey, with a summary and then skills ahead of the jobs. For a staff engineer that summary is where scope gets stated (how many teams build on your designs), and its projects section, printed after experience, holds multi-quarter programs that span more than one title.
Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst drops the summary and opens on your current role; choose it when your title and employer already signal the level and the latest job tells the story.
What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order
FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Three lines on scope, not stack: the area you set direction for, how many teams depend on it, and the kind of problem you are brought in to solve. A principal version widens the same lines from one organization to several.
- Skills. At this level the list leans toward architecture and practice (distributed systems, reliability engineering, API design) more than languages. Keep the languages you still write and review in production; four or five is plenty.
- Work Experience. Bullets should show leverage: a design others built on, a standard adopted beyond your team, an incident class that stopped recurring. Write the number of teams or engineers affected, because that is how a staff role is measured.
- Projects. Cross-team programs often run across several quarters, so they read better here than squeezed into one job. Give each a one-line purpose, your role (author, technical lead, reviewer) and how far it was adopted.
- Education. One line. A degree matters little at staff level, but a short entry keeps the timeline complete.

Writes the design documents for cross-team changes, leads the architecture review for money movement and mentors senior engineers. Known for turning recurring incidents into platform fixes.
Experience
Staff Software Engineer, Tidewater Commerce, Seattle, WA (03/2022 to Present)
- Set technical direction for the payments platform used by 11 product teams and about 4 million transactions a day.
- Authored the idempotency and retry standard for payment APIs; all 11 teams adopted it and duplicate-charge incidents stopped in 2025.
- Lead the architecture review held every two weeks for designs that touch money movement.
- Mentor four senior engineers; two have since been promoted to staff.
- Wrote the ledger reconciliation service in Go that replaced a nightly batch job with a continuous check.
Senior Software Engineer, Larkspur Logistics, Portland, OR (06/2017 to 02/2022)
- Technical lead for the shipment tracking platform and its team of six engineers.
- Designed the Kafka event pipeline that moved tracking updates from hourly batches to under a minute.
- Started the incident review practice that the wider engineering organization later adopted.
Software Engineer, Brightfield Media, Seattle, WA (07/2013 to 05/2017)
- Built Java services for subscription billing and migrated them from a legacy database to PostgreSQL.
- Joined the on-call rotation and wrote its first runbooks.
Projects

- Wrote the design and failure-mode analysis approved by the CTO and engineering directors.
- Ran quarterly failover drills; the first unplanned regional failover in 2025 completed with no customer impact.
Payments platform onboarding kit: Internal guides and service templates for teams building on the platform, 2024.
- Cut the time for a new team to ship its first payment flow from about six weeks to two.

How to make the sample yours
Count the teams, not the tickets
Replace the sample figures with yours: teams using your library, services moved to your design, engineers who bring work to your reviews. Breadth of adoption is the evidence at this level.
Name the documents you wrote
Design docs, RFCs and technical strategies are staff-level output. One bullet that names the decision and who adopted it says more than a list of technologies.
Show which engineers you grow
Mentoring juniors is expected of seniors; mentoring senior engineers toward staff marks this level. Promotions of people you mentored are worth a line if they agree to it.
Write the principal version wider
For a principal role, move from one organization to several: company-wide standards, multi-year technical direction, work with directors on roadmaps and headcount.
Keep one hands-on line per job
Staff engineers still write code and debug production. A bullet about a critical piece you built yourself stops the page reading as meetings only.

Mistakes to avoid
- A summary that lists languages and frameworks. At staff level the summary is for scope and impact; tools belong in the skills block.
- Bullets a senior engineer could also write ("built service X"). Add what changed beyond your team because of it.
- Claiming sole credit for organization-wide work. Use "led", "authored" or "drove" and name the group that built it.
- Cutting the projects section to save space. For many staff candidates it holds the strongest evidence on the page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a staff and a senior resume?
Scope. A senior resume shows strong work within one team; a staff resume shows work that changed how several teams build, through designs, standards and the people you mentor.
How is a principal resume different from a staff resume?
Same structure, wider radius: company-wide or multi-organization direction, multi-year plans and regular work with directors and executives. The projects section usually grows to match.
Should a staff engineer resume be two pages?
One full page works for many staff engineers; two is fine with twelve or more years and several cross-team programs. Cut early-career detail before recent projects.
Can I mention an internal design document on my resume?
Name it and its outcome in a bullet, without attaching or linking the document itself. Describe the decision and who adopted it instead.
Do staff engineers still need a skills section?
A short one. Reviewers check that you still work in their stack, so keep the languages and systems you use today and drop the rest.
Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 13 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
