Lead resume template for team leads

Short answer

Daniel suits a lead resume in design or product work: its rounded heading pills give the page a softer look, and the summary at the top explains what "lead" means where you work. The fictional sample is a lead product designer who still ships features while running a team of four, with both kinds of evidence in the current job and a portfolio case study below.

Why Daniel suits a lead resume

Daniel is the template meant for designers and product people, with section headings in rounded grey pills and skills in a three-column grid. It prints a summary first, which a lead needs because the title covers everything from a senior designer with one mentee to a manager in all but name; the summary says which.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has the same section order with grey rules instead of pills and no colour, a closer match for team leads in engineering, operations or finance.

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Say how many people you lead and how much hands-on work you still do. "Leads a team of four product designers and owns the design of the payments flow" answers the player-coach question before anyone asks it.
  2. Skills. Daniel prints skills in a grid without labels, so start with craft (interaction design, prototyping, usability testing), then tools, then leadership skills such as running critiques and hiring. A lead page needs both halves visible.
  3. Work Experience. In the lead role, split the bullets between what you built and what you made possible: features you designed yourself, then the standards, reviews and hires that raised the team's work. Earlier senior roles can stay purely hands-on.
  4. Projects. One portfolio case study with a measured outcome shows the craft a recruiter will look for behind your portfolio link. Choose work you designed, not work you only reviewed.
  5. Education. Degree, school and year in one line. A bootcamp or design certificate can sit here too, but one or two at most.
  6. Mentoring and talks. Mentoring and talks print last. For a lead, this list backs up the people side with work outside the day job: a mentoring program, a meetup talk, a course you teach.

How to make the sample yours

State the team size near the top

Lead can mean one mentee or eight reports. A number in the summary or headline removes the guesswork and helps a recruiter match you to lead or manager openings.

Keep two hands-on bullets in the lead role

People hiring a lead want proof you still do the work. If every bullet is about rituals and reviews, the page reads like a manager applying for the wrong job.

Separate reports from people you guide

If the designers report to someone else and you direct their work day to day, write "lead a team of four (no direct reports)". It is honest and avoids an awkward reference check.

Swap the design work for your field's version

A lead engineer names systems and code reviews, a lead nurse names shifts and unit standards, a lead carpenter names crews and builds. The pattern holds: your own output first, then the team's.

Make the portfolio match the bullets

Every case study named on the page should be in the portfolio. If confidentiality limits what you can show, say so on the portfolio rather than leaving it out silently.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • lead product designer
  • design leadership
  • design critique
  • design system
  • interaction design
  • prototyping
  • usability testing
  • Figma
  • accessibility (WCAG)
  • cross-functional collaboration
  • hiring designers
  • mentoring
  • product strategy

Mistakes to avoid

  • Dropping all hands-on work from the latest job. A lead who shows no craft looks like a manager, and lead openings usually expect both.
  • Claiming direct reports you do not have. "Led" covers guidance; "managed" suggests reporting lines that a reference will confirm or deny.
  • A skills grid full of leadership buzzwords with no craft left. The grid prints without labels, so the balance is visible at a glance.
  • Listing every feature the team shipped as your own. Separate what you designed from what you reviewed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a lead and a manager resume?

A lead resume shows your own work next to the team's; a manager resume is built around the team's results, hiring and budget. If you still produce the core work yourself, write it as a lead.

Should a lead resume list direct reports?

Only real ones. If people take direction from you without reporting to you, give the team size and add "no direct reports" where it could be misread.

How do I show leadership without a lead title?

Name the things leads do: running critiques or code reviews, onboarding new hires, setting a standard the team adopted. Put them in bullets under your current title.

How long should a lead resume be?

One page for most leads with under about ten years of experience. A second page only makes sense if it holds recent, relevant work.

Does a lead designer still need a portfolio link?

Yes. Leads are usually hired on craft as well as leadership, so the portfolio should include at least one recent project you designed yourself.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 11 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
