CAD designer resume template

Short answer

Meridian suits a CAD designer: it prints skills above experience in labelled rows, so CAD packages, GD&T and drawing standards are read first, on a plain page with no colour. The fictional sample models industrial pump parts in SolidWorks, releases about 400 drawings a year through PDM and holds the CSWP, after four years producing steel shop drawings in AutoCAD.

Why Meridian suits a CAD designer resume

Meridian prints skills before work experience in labelled rows, which suits a job screened on software and standards: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, PDM and GD&T sit on their own rows at the top. The black-and-grey page with thin rules looks at home in an engineering office and prints cleanly for the shop floor interview.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education straight after experience; choose it when an associate or bachelor's degree in drafting or engineering technology is the requirement you most need to show.

Meridian template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Industry and product type (pumps, machinery, HVAC, enclosures, structural steel), CAD packages, drawing standards and your volume. Say whether you design parts yourself or detail engineers' designs.
  2. Skills. Technical: modeling, drawings, GD&T, tolerance stacks, sheet metal, weldments, BOMs. Tools: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo or NX, PDM and the ERP. Put the package from the posting first.
  3. Work Experience. Drawings or models released per year, change orders handled, standards you work to, and problems you solved with the shop or suppliers (tolerance stack-ups, first article findings, rework avoided).
  4. Education. Associate degree or certificate in drafting, design or engineering technology, with year. A bachelor's in engineering goes here too if you have one.
  5. Certifications. SOLIDWORKS describes the CSWA as for newer users and the CSWP for people using the software at work full time for six months or more, so list the higher level you hold, with the year.

Rockford, IL | dana.rutledge@example.com | (815) 555-0107 | linkedin.com/in/sample-dana-rutledge

CAD designer with ten years in industrial products, now modeling pump parts and assemblies in SolidWorks and releasing about 400 production drawings a year with GD&T to ASME Y14.5. Works directly with machinists and suppliers on tolerance problems. Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional; earlier drafted structural steel in AutoCAD.

Experience

CAD Designer, Rock River Pump Company, Rockford, IL (04/2019 to Present)

  • Model parts and assemblies in SolidWorks for industrial pumps and create production drawings with GD&T to ASME Y14.5.
  • Release about 400 drawings a year through SOLIDWORKS PDM, including engineering change orders.
  • Built standard part libraries and drawing templates that cut a typical new drawing from about four hours to two.
  • Resolved tolerance stack-ups found at first article inspection with machinists and two casting suppliers.

Drafter, Prairie Steel Fabricators, Rockford, IL (06/2015 to 03/2019)

  • Produced shop drawings for structural steel and weldments in AutoCAD.
  • Converted about 1,200 paper drawings to CAD for the archive.
  • Took field measurements for retrofit projects.

Education

AAS, Mechanical Design and Drafting Technology, Rock Valley Technical College (05/2015)

Certifications

  • Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP), Dassault Systèmes (2021)
  • Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA), Dassault Systèmes (2016)

Skills

How to make the sample yours

Name the drawing standard

ASME Y14.5 for GD&T in the US, or the ISO standards if you work to them. ASME calls Y14.5 the authoritative guideline for GD&T, and drawing checkers look for it by name.

Show how your drawings perform downstream

Fewer requests for information from the shop, first article passes, less rework: one number tells a manager your drawings are buildable.

Match the CAD package

Moving from AutoCAD to SolidWorks, or SolidWorks to Creo? Lead with any project you finished in the target package and any certification in it.

Mention data management

PDM or PLM check-ins, revisions and engineering change orders are daily work in larger companies. Say which system you used.

Drafter or designer?

If you create the design, say so; if you detail engineers' models, write "detailed" and show accuracy and speed instead.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • CAD designer
  • SolidWorks
  • AutoCAD
  • Inventor
  • 3D modeling
  • production drawings
  • GD&T
  • ASME Y14.5
  • tolerance stack-up
  • sheet metal design
  • weldments
  • bill of materials
  • PDM
  • engineering change orders
  • CSWP

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing CAD packages with no drawings or parts behind them.
  • Claiming design ownership of parts you only detailed.
  • Attaching or linking customer drawings that are proprietary.
  • Leaving out the drawing standard you work to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CAD designer and a drafter?

A drafter turns designs into drawings; a CAD designer also makes design decisions within the engineer's requirements: part geometry, fasteners, tolerances. Many jobs mix both, so describe the decisions you actually make.

Is a SOLIDWORKS certification worth listing?

Yes, if the job uses SOLIDWORKS. List the highest level you hold; SOLIDWORKS pitches the CSWP at people who have used the software at work full time for six months or more.

Should a CAD designer include a portfolio?

A short PDF of models and drawings you are allowed to share helps, especially for design roles. Use personal or redrawn parts if your employer's drawings are proprietary.

How do I move from AutoCAD drafting into 3D design?

Finish a few parts and assemblies in the 3D package, take an entry-level certification in it and put both near the top of the page.

How long should a CAD designer resume be?

One page for most designers; two if you have a long list of products or industries to cover.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.

  1. Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS: SOLIDWORKS Certification Program (three levels: CSWA for users new to the software; CSWP for those using it in a work environment full time (at least 40 hours a week) for six months or more; CSWE for seasoned experts)
  2. ASME: Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing (Y14.5 is considered the authoritative guideline for the design language of GD&T, establishing symbols, rules and definitions for engineering drawings and models)
