Mechanical engineer resume template

Short answer

FAANGPath works for a mechanical engineer because it prints skills before experience in a minimal layout, so CAD, simulation and GD&T are read before job titles. The fictional sample designs commercial water pumps in Milwaukee: a housing redesign that removed two machining steps, an FEA fix for a cracked bracket, drawings to ASME Y14.5 and a Formula SAE project from university.

Why FAANGPath suits a mechanical engineer resume

FAANGPath puts a labelled skills block above the jobs in a plain centred layout, so a hiring manager sees SolidWorks, ANSYS, GD&T and tolerance analysis before any job title. Mechanical postings tend to list exactly those tools, and the black-and-grey page leaves the numbers in the bullets to do the work.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has the same skills-first order with grey rules beside each heading; it is a matter of which look you prefer.

FAANGPath template details and test results

What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order

FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Product area, years and the stage of the design cycle you own (concept, detail design, validation, production support). Name the materials and processes you design for: castings, sheet metal, injection-molded plastics, machined parts.
  2. Skills. Methods first (GD&T, tolerance stacks, FEA, DFM, root cause analysis), then CAD, simulation and PDM tools. Write the drawing standard if you use one; ASME Y14.5 is the reference for GD&T in the US.
  3. Work Experience. One part or system per bullet: what you changed, how you proved it (analysis, test, first article) and the result in cost, mass, lead time or field failures. Name the volume or product line so the scale is clear.
  4. Projects. Early-career engineers can use a university team or capstone project here: what you designed, how you validated it and one measured result.
  5. Education. BS or MS in mechanical engineering with school and year. Add a co-op or relevant coursework only in the first few years.
  6. Certifications. FE exam result if you passed it, and CAD certifications if the posting mentions them. Few mechanical roles require a PE; list it if you hold it.

Lucas Moreau

Mechanical Design Engineer

Milwaukee, WI | lucas.moreau@example.com | (414) 555-0166 | linkedin.com/in/sample-lucas-moreau

Mechanical design engineer with five years taking pump housings, brackets and seal assemblies from concept to production. Models in SolidWorks, runs tolerance stack-ups and FEA, writes drawings to ASME Y14.5 and works with suppliers on castings and machined parts.

Experience

Mechanical Design Engineer, Kettle River Pumps, Milwaukee, WI (07/2022 to Present)

  • Own the mechanical design of a line of commercial water pumps, from concept models to released drawings and first article inspection.
  • Redesigned a pump housing to remove two machining operations, cutting unit cost by about $11 and supplier lead time by a week.
  • Ran FEA in ANSYS on a mounting bracket that cracked in the field, changed the rib layout and confirmed the fix in a 500-hour vibration test.
  • Wrote GD&T drawings to ASME Y14.5 for 40 parts and led the tolerance stack-up for the shaft seal interface.

Associate Mechanical Engineer, Lakefront Machine Works, Racine, WI (06/2021 to 06/2022)

  • Designed four inspection fixtures for a CNC cell, cutting check time per part by about a third.
  • Updated process sheets and work instructions after engineering changes.
  • Collected scrap data by defect type and presented the top causes to the plant manager each month.

Projects

Formula SAE front uprights: Designed and machined the front uprights for the university Formula SAE car.

  • Cut upright mass by 18% against the previous design, checked with FEA and a bench load test.

Education

BS, Mechanical Engineering, Great Lakes Polytechnic University (05/2021)

Certifications

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, passed, NCEES (2021)

Skills

GD&T (ASME Y14.5), Tolerance stack-up analysis, Finite element analysis, Design for manufacturing, Castings and machined parts, Root cause analysis, SolidWorks, ANSYS Mechanical, SolidWorks PDM, MATLAB, Supplier communication, Design reviews

How to make the sample yours

Swap in your product and processes

Pumps and castings are the sample's world. Write yours (medical devices, HVAC equipment, consumer products, tooling) and the manufacturing processes you design for.

Lead each bullet with the part

Start with what you designed or fixed ("pump housing", "mounting bracket") so a reader can scan the hardware you have owned.

Show how you proved it

Analysis alone is half the story. Pair each FEA or stack-up bullet with the test, inspection or field data that confirmed it.

Use your CAD and PDM names

Replace SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM with Creo, NX, Inventor, Windchill or Teamcenter if those are what you used. Postings often name one.

Drop the student project after a few years

Once you have two jobs with released designs, remove the university project and give the space to a third job bullet.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • mechanical design
  • SolidWorks
  • GD&T
  • ASME Y14.5
  • tolerance stack-up
  • finite element analysis (FEA)
  • ANSYS
  • design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • castings
  • machined parts
  • prototyping
  • design validation
  • root cause analysis
  • engineering change orders
  • first article inspection

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every CAD package you used once in university.
  • Bullets that describe tasks ("created 3D models") without the part, the change or the result.
  • Claiming a cost saving that belonged to the whole team without saying it was shared.
  • Customer names or confidential drawings in a portfolio link.

Frequently asked questions

What should a mechanical engineer put in the skills section?

Methods you use (GD&T, tolerance analysis, FEA, DFM), then the CAD, simulation and PDM tools by name. Keep to what you could use in an interview exercise tomorrow.

Should I mention ASME Y14.5 on my resume?

Yes, if you write or read GD&T drawings. ASME describes Y14.5 as the authoritative guideline for GD&T, and its current edition is 2018, reaffirmed in 2024. "GD&T to ASME Y14.5" says more than "GD&T" alone.

How do I show results as a design engineer?

Pick measures your company tracked: unit cost, part count, mass, lead time, warranty returns, test hours passed. One per bullet, tied to the part you changed.

Do mechanical engineers need a PE license?

Many product design postings do not ask for one, and the ones that do say so. If you passed the FE exam, list it with the year, and add the PE with its state if you hold it.

How long should a mechanical engineer resume be?

One page for up to about five years, two after that. A portfolio link can carry drawings and renderings you are allowed to share.

Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
