Service designer resume template

Short answer

Leslie suits a service designer: experience prints straight after the summary, so the services you redesigned and what changed for users come before methods and tools, under one blue accent. The fictional sample is a senior service designer in Leeds working on a government licensing service, with a blueprint, discovery research and passed service assessments, after four years redesigning council waste and housing repair services.

Why Leslie suits a service designer resume

Leslie prints work experience ahead of skills, which matters for service designers: a hiring panel wants the services, channels and outcomes before the list of methods everyone in the field shares. The centred blue header and short blue underlines give one restrained accent, in keeping with public sector and enterprise employers.

Second choice: Daniel. Daniel prints skills first under grey heading pills, a softer look for design agencies that hire on method and portfolio.

Leslie template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. The kinds of services you design (licensing, benefits, healthcare, banking, utilities), the channels they span (online, phone, paper, face to face) and your level. In UK government the Digital and Data profession framework describes six service designer levels, from associate to head of service design; use the matching title.
  2. Work Experience. For each service: the problem, the research behind it, what you changed across channels and what happened (fewer failed applications, calls avoided, time saved for staff). If you went through service assessments, name the phase and the result.
  3. Skills. Methods on Technical (blueprinting, journey mapping, co-design, prototyping across channels), tools on Tools (Miro, Figma, the GOV.UK Prototype Kit). Keep it short; the experience proves the methods.
  4. Education. Degree with year. Service design is entered from design, research, policy and operations, so a non-design degree is fine to list as it is.

How to make the sample yours

Map your work to the Service Standard

For UK government roles, the 14-point Service Standard starts with understanding users and their needs and solving a whole problem for users. Use its language where it describes what you did, such as joined-up experiences across channels.

Show the offline channels

Phone lines, letters, counters and caseworker tools are what separate service design from interface design. Give at least one bullet that is not about a screen.

Measure the service, not the deliverable

Blueprints and maps are means. Report what changed: completion, avoidable contact, processing time, error rates.

Translate for the private sector

Banks, insurers and health providers hire service designers too. Swap assessments and policy intent for customer journeys, operations costs and complaints.

Name the phase you worked in

Discovery, alpha, beta and live call for different work; the GOV.UK Service Manual describes alpha as the phase for trying out solutions to the problems found in discovery. Say which phases you covered on each service.

  • Taking credit for research a user researcher led; say you ran it together.
  • Sharing internal assessment reports or unpublished policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a service designer and a UX designer?

A UX or interaction designer usually designs screens and flows; a service designer designs the whole service, including phone, paper, staff processes and the handoffs between teams. Show at least one offline channel to make the difference visible.

How do I show service design work in a portfolio?

Two or three case studies with the problem, research, a blueprint or journey map, what changed and the result. Redact anything not published.

Do I need a design degree to become a service designer?

No. People come from research, policy, operations and customer service as well as design. Show that you have mapped and changed a real service.

Which level should I apply for in UK government?

The Government Digital and Data profession framework sets out six service designer levels and the Civil Service grades usually attached to each, for example HEO or SEO for a service designer and SEO or Grade 7 for a senior. Read the level descriptions against your experience.

How long should a service designer resume be?

Two pages at most, with case studies in the portfolio rather than long bullets.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
