Construction project manager resume template

Short answer

Catalyst suits a construction project manager or construction manager whose recent projects carry the application. It opens straight on work experience with no summary, so the first lines an owner or operations director reads are project type, value, schedule and budget results. The fictional sample is a general contractor PM in Denver who delivered a $48M medical office building two weeks early, with a short list of selected projects at the end.

Why Catalyst suits a construction project manager resume

Catalyst starts with work experience and prints no summary, which suits a PM whose delivered projects (value, schedule, contingency returned) are the whole argument. Its teal headings over full-width rules keep each employer distinct, and the headline under the name carries the sector and any CCM.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta keeps a summary and prints education right after experience; choose it when moving from project engineer to PM and the construction management degree helps.

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. Lead each job with the projects: type, value, delivery method and how they finished against schedule and budget. Then the parts of the job you own (buyout, change orders, schedule, owner meetings, safety) with one result each.
  2. Skills. Project controls in the first row (estimating, cost forecasting, CPM scheduling, buyout, change order negotiation, closeout), then software: Procore, Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, Bluebeam. Catalyst prints labelled rows.
  3. Education. Construction management, civil engineering or architecture degree with school and year. Without a degree, the jobs carry the page; keep this to any trade or college training you have.
  4. Certifications. Safety cards (OSHA 30-hour construction is common on GC sites), first aid, and management credentials such as the CCM. CMAA's CCM requires field experience, at least two references and an exam covering 10 practice areas, so give the year.
  5. Selected projects. "Selected projects": three or four lines with type, value, size, delivery method and finish date. Owners and estimators read this list first when pricing your experience.

How to make the sample yours

Lead with your largest delivered project

Replace the $48M medical office building with your own, and say how it finished: early, on time, within contingency. Owners hire on delivery record.

Say which side you were on

General contractor, construction manager as agent or owner's representative are different jobs. Make your role clear in the job title or first bullet.

Give money numbers you controlled

Contract value, buyout savings, change order totals, contingency returned. Only use figures you managed or can explain line by line.

Keep one schedule recovery

A late delivery, weather or a design change you worked around shows how you manage risk. Name the tool and what you resequenced.

Put the safety record in plainly

Lost-time incidents, inspections passed, safety programs you ran. One bullet is enough if it is specific.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • construction manager
  • general contractor

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing projects without values, sizes or finish dates.
  • Claiming a project's whole outcome when you joined it halfway; say when you took over.
  • Using "managed" for everything; say whether you owned the budget, the schedule or both.
  • Leaving safety off a construction resume.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a construction project manager and a construction manager resume?

The titles overlap. At a general contractor, the project manager runs cost, schedule and subcontracts for a project; "construction manager" can mean the same role, a senior manager over several projects, or an owner's representative. Use the title you held and describe the scope in the first bullet.

Is the CCM worth putting on my resume?

Yes, if you hold it. CMAA describes the CCM as recognizing professionals in construction management, with requirements covering education, field experience, at least two references and an exam on 10 practice areas.

How do I list many projects without a long resume?

Keep three or four in a "Selected projects" list with type, size, value, delivery method and year, and mention only the largest inside your job bullets.

How do I move from project engineer to project manager?

Show the PM tasks you already do: cost reports, buyout, owner meetings, schedule updates. A promotion line inside a job ("promoted to assistant project manager in 2019") helps.

How long should a construction project manager resume be?

Two pages is normal for experienced PMs; keep the current job and the selected projects on page one.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
