Short answer

Daniel suits a data analyst who works next to product managers: rounded grey heading pills give a considered look without colour, and skills print above the jobs in a three-column grid. Why Daniel suits a data analyst resume

Daniel suits analysts who sit with product managers and designers: section headings sit in rounded grey pills, so the page looks considered without any colour, and skills print above experience. Its three-column grid holds query and statistics skills, BI and warehouse tools, and presentation skills as three tidy groups.

Second choice: Meridian. For a large company's application portal, Meridian is the plainer option: the same order, labelled skill rows and no shaded headings (Resumity rates Daniel "Balanced" because of them).

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name your level, domain and stack in one sentence, then what you do with the answer: recommendations, experiments, metric definitions. Senior data analyst postings look for ownership of a metric or a decision, so name one.
  2. Skills. Daniel's grid has no labels, so the first group should hold SQL and the statistics you can explain, the second the BI and warehouse tools, the third communication. If you use Power BI, write DAX and Power Query out by name; Microsoft expects PL-300 candidates to be proficient in both.
  3. Work Experience. End every bullet in a decision or a change: a feature launched, a report retired, a launch stopped. The query is the means; the reader is hiring for judgement about what the numbers mean.
  4. Education. Degree and year. Economics, statistics, maths and the social sciences all show quantitative training; add a thesis only if it used real data and you graduated recently.
  5. Certifications. Write the full title, Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, with the year. Microsoft expects holders to renew it yearly with a free online assessment, so check that it is active before you list it.

Megan Fitzgerald

Senior Data Analyst, SQL and Power BI

Philadelphia, PA | megan.fitzgerald@example.com | (215) 555-0164 | linkedin.com/in/sample-megan-fitzgerald | github.com/sample-megan-fitzgerald

Senior data analyst with seven years in subscription retail and healthcare operations. Writes the SQL, builds the Power BI models and turns the answer into a recommendation a product manager can act on. Leads A/B test analysis for the growth team and mentors two analysts.

Experience

Senior Data Analyst, Larder Box, Philadelphia, PA (04/2023 to Present)

  • Built the subscription retention model in SQL and Power BI used in the weekly leadership review; it showed that customers who skipped two weeks in a row canceled at three times the usual rate, which led to a new pause option.
  • Analyze about 40 A/B tests a year for the growth team, from sample size planning to the readout; stopped two launches whose early wins disappeared at full sample.
  • Moved 60 recurring Excel reports into dbt models and Power BI, saving the operations team about 10 hours a week.
  • Agreed a single definition of "active subscriber" with finance and product, ending three conflicting numbers in board decks.
  • Mentor two junior analysts and review their SQL before it reaches a dashboard.

Data Analyst, Schuylkill Health Partners, Philadelphia, PA (08/2019 to 03/2023)

  • Reported clinic no-show rates by site and weekday in Tableau; reminder texts were added at the five worst sites.
  • Wrote SQL against the scheduling database to track referral wait times for the operations director.
  • Matched patient visit data from two systems after a merger and documented every matching rule.

Education

BS, Economics, Wissahickon State University (05/2019)

Certifications

  • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, Microsoft (2026)

Skills

SQL (window functions, CTEs), Python (pandas), A/B test analysis, Regression and confidence intervals, Cohort and retention analysis, Data modeling, Power BI (DAX, Power Query), dbt, Snowflake, Tableau, Excel, Git, Presenting to leadership, Writing analysis memos, Mentoring analysts

How to make the sample yours

Swap the BI tool for yours

Tableau, Looker or Qlik: change the skills grid and the bullets together. Keep the SQL line whatever the tool, since analyst screens test it more than any dashboard product.

End each bullet with what changed

The retention bullet ends in a new pause option; the A/B bullet ends in two launches stopped. Rewrite yours until each one has an outcome after the semicolon.

Show that you can define a metric

Agreeing one definition of "active subscriber" with finance and product is senior work. If you have settled an argument about a number, give it a bullet.

Keep experiment work if you have it

Sample size planning, readouts, results that did not hold at full sample. Experiment analysis is a frequent senior requirement and easy to evidence.

Show seniority through review and mentoring

Reviewing other analysts' SQL, coaching juniors, setting team standards. For a senior data analyst title, one bullet like this is expected.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Dashboards counted by number ("built 50 dashboards") with no user or decision behind them.
  • Python listed when you have only run a notebook someone else wrote.
  • Findings stated as causes when the analysis only showed a correlation.
  • Confidential revenue or patient figures; use percentages or ratios instead.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a senior data analyst resume different from a junior one?

Ownership. A junior resume shows reports built and questions answered; a senior one shows metrics defined, experiments run end to end, decisions changed and analysts mentored. The tools are often the same.

Should a data analyst resume link to a portfolio?

If you have public work, yes: a Tableau Public or Power BI sample, or a GitHub repository with SQL and a short write-up. Use public or synthetic data only, never an employer's.

Which tools should a data analyst list first?

SQL, then the BI tool the posting names, then Python or R if you use them for real analysis. In Daniel's unlabelled grid the first column is read first, so lead with those.

How do I describe analysis that did not change a decision?

Say what it ruled out. Stopping a launch whose early win vanished, or showing that a feared drop was seasonal, saved money or time; that is an outcome too.

Is the Power BI certification worth listing?

If the posting uses Power BI, yes. Microsoft built the PL-300 exam around preparing, modeling, visualizing and analyzing data and managing Power BI, so it backs up the tool line in your skills.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
