Database administrator resume template
Short answer
A senior DBA is best served by Catalyst. It opens on your current job with no summary, so the estate you run, its availability and your recovery testing are the first things read. The fictional sample has twelve years on SQL Server and Oracle at a hospital system and an insurer: availability groups, a move to Azure SQL Managed Instance, automated patching and backups that are restored every week.

Why Catalyst suits a database administrator resume
Catalyst goes from the header straight into work experience, and for an experienced DBA the current estate is the argument: number of instances, availability, recovery targets met in a real test. Skills follow the jobs as labelled rows, so versions and tooling still have a clear home under teal headings set in IBM Plex Sans.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta keeps a summary and a conventional business look with education right after experience, which suits public sector and banking DBA roles.
What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order
Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Work Experience. With no summary printed, put engine and level in the headline: "Senior Database Administrator, SQL Server and Azure SQL". Then open the current job with the size of the estate and its availability, and give each later bullet one operational result: a failover time, a migration count, a restore test, a tuning gain.
- Skills. Technical holds the administration skills (availability groups, backup and recovery, tuning, security features); Tools holds the platforms and automation (Azure SQL Managed Instance, PowerShell, dbatools, monitoring). Give versions where it matters: "SQL Server 2016 to 2022".
- Education. One line at the bottom. Plenty of DBAs come up through support or development without a computing degree; list what you have.
- Certifications. Vendor certifications count for more in DBA work than in most IT roles. Catalyst prints them last, so if one is a hard requirement in the posting, mention it in the headline too. Microsoft certifications such as Azure Database Administrator Associate renew every 12 months.

How to make the sample yours
Size your estate
Instances, databases, total terabytes and engines. "180 instances supporting clinical reporting, billing and lab systems" tells a reader in one line what you are trusted with.
State recovery objectives and prove them
Write the recovery point and recovery time objectives you work to and how you test them: weekly test restores, quarterly failover drills, a timed result.
Show automation by name
PowerShell, dbatools, Ansible or scheduled jobs that patch, check and report. Automation separates a DBA who scales from one who clicks through the same steps every month.
Keep one bullet on tuning with the app teams
The sample works through Query Store each week with developers. Include how you find the worst queries and one result, such as CPU or run time saved.
Mention the audits you supported
Encryption, auditing, access reviews and evidence for external auditors are routine in regulated sectors. Say what you implemented rather than naming a regulation you did not work under.

Mistakes to avoid
- Starting the page with an objective or profile block. This layout leaves it out, so lead with the headline and the estate.
- "Maintained databases" with no size, availability figure or recovery test.
- Listing every database engine you have connected to. Keep the ones you have administered in production.
- Leaving out on-call and incidents, which are a large part of how DBAs are judged.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.
| Extractor | Name, email, phone | Headings | Bullets intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| pdf.js 4.10.38 | All found | 4 of 4 | 8 of 8 |
| pdftotext (Xpdf) 4.00 | All found | 4 of 4 | 8 of 8 |

Frequently asked questions
Should a DBA list database versions?
Yes, for the engines you run now. "SQL Server 2016 to 2022" or "PostgreSQL 14 and 16" shows you are current, and it matters when an employer is planning an upgrade.
Is a cloud database certification worth it for an on-premises DBA?
It helps if the employer is moving to the cloud. Microsoft's Azure Database Administrator Associate covers both Azure SQL and SQL Server on-premises, and it renews every 12 months through a free online assessment.
How do I show on-call and incident work?
Give the rotation (one week in four), the kind of incidents you handle and one you resolved or prevented from recurring. A short line is enough; leaving it out makes the job look easier than it is.
I want to move from DBA to data platform engineering. What do I change?
Bring automation, infrastructure as code and cloud migrations to the top of each job, and add any pipeline or data modelling work. The database developer and data engineer pages show those roles' emphasis.
How far back should a database administrator resume go?
About 15 years. Earlier roles on engines nobody runs any more can shrink to one line or go.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
