Event planner resume template
Short answer
Olivia suits an event planner who wants the page to look finished at first glance: a solid blue header band with the name in white, then skills before work experience. The fictional sample plans corporate conferences and incentive trips for a Nashville agency after three years coordinating weddings and banquets at a hotel. Each bullet gives the event size, the budget or the money protected, and closes with a short list of signature events.

Why Olivia suits an event planner resume
Olivia's full-width blue header band makes the page look designed before anyone reads a line, which suits a job judged partly on presentation. Underneath it is still one column with labelled skill rows, so the planning platforms (Cvent, Social Tables) sit on their own Tools row above the event history.
Second choice: Daniel. Daniel keeps a softer look with headings in grey pills and no colour band, a calmer choice for an in-house corporate events team.
What goes in each section, in Olivia's order
Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Name the events you plan (sales kickoffs, user conferences, weddings, galas), their usual size and the largest budget you have run. Add the stage you own: sourcing, contracting, registration or the whole thing from brief to wrap report.
- Skills. Olivia prints labelled rows. Put the planning work in the first row (venue sourcing, hotel contracts, room blocks, run-of-show), the software in Tools, and keep soft skills to two. A hiring manager scanning for Cvent finds it here before the job history.
- Work Experience. One event or program per bullet, each with a headcount and a budget or saving. Describe clients by type ("a 900-person software user conference") rather than by name, and keep one bullet about a contract you renegotiated or an attrition charge you avoided.
- Education. Degree, school and year. A hospitality, tourism or event management degree carries more weight here than in most jobs: the Events Industry Council counts one earned in the past five years toward CMP eligibility, cutting the experience needed from 36 months to 24.
- Certifications. CMP with the year earned. If you are still working toward it, write "CMP exam scheduled 03/2027" in the summary rather than adding the letters here.
- Selected events. A "Selected events" list lets three signature events stand on their own, which a long job history can bury. Pick the ones closest to the posting: a gala for a nonprofit role, a multi-city roadshow for an agency.

How to make the sample yours
Swap in your three biggest events
Keep the scale honest: attendees, venue type and the budget you controlled. If you ran only part of the budget (AV, or food and beverage), name that part.
Planner or coordinator: write what you did
If your role was carrying out someone else's plan on site, use "coordinated" and describe the logistics you ran. Keep "planned" for events where you shaped the brief, picked the venue and signed off the budget.
Show one contract win
Room blocks, food and beverage minimums and AV packages are where planners protect money. Replace the sample's 210-to-175-room renegotiation with a real one of yours, or drop the bullet.
Match the software to the posting
The sample lists Cvent and Social Tables. Write what you actually used (Eventbrite, Bizzabo, Swoogo, or a shared spreadsheet run-of-show) and leave out tools you only saw a demo of.
Mirror the title in the headline
Event planner, event coordinator, meeting planner and event manager are used loosely. Use the posting's title in your headline when it describes the work you did.

- Filling a planner resume with day-of tasks (badge printing, table setup) that belong on a coordinator resume.
- Putting "CMP" after your name before you have passed the exam.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an event planner and an event coordinator resume?
A planner resume shows ownership of the brief, the budget and the contracts. A coordinator resume shows the plan carried out well: timelines kept, vendors managed on the day, problems fixed before guests noticed. If most of your work was coordination, lead with that and do not claim budgets you did not control.
Do I need the CMP to get hired as an event planner?
Many postings list it as preferred rather than required. To sit the exam, the Events Industry Council asks for 36 months of full-time industry work in the past five years (or 24 months plus an events-related degree) and 25 clock hours of education, so most planners earn it a few years in.
Should an event planner resume include a portfolio link?
Yes, if you have events you are allowed to show: a short page with photos, the brief and your part in each. Put the link in the header next to LinkedIn, and leave out private or confidential events.
How do I show freelance or volunteer events?
Group them under one entry such as "Freelance Event Planner" with dates, and give each event a bullet with its size and budget. Volunteer galas and fundraisers count if you planned them; just say they were volunteer.
How long should an event planner resume be?
One page for most planners under ten years in. The "Selected events" list carries the highlights, so older jobs need only two bullets each.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
