Teacher resume template

Short answer

Leslie suits most classroom teachers. It prints work experience before skills, so grade levels, subjects and results are read first, and its blue header gives the page one calm touch of colour. Certifications print near the end, so the sample names the license in the headline and summary. The fictional sample teaches seventh-grade science in Illinois, with a rewritten unit, IEP accommodations, a PLC she leads and a Science Olympiad team.

Why Leslie suits a teacher resume

Leslie prints experience straight after the summary, then skills, which matches how a principal reads a teacher resume: which grades and subjects, in what kind of school, with what results. The centred blue header and short underlines look tidy on a printed copy at an interview table, and the labelled skill rows keep instructional methods apart from the platforms.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta puts education right after experience in plain black and grey; pick it as a new teacher whose degree and student teaching carry the application.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. License state and area first ("Illinois-licensed science teacher, grades 6 to 8"), then years, grade levels and the kind of school. Finish with what colleagues know you for: labs, data meetings, a club, mentoring new staff.
  2. Work Experience. For each school give the grade, subject and number of sections or students, then results: growth on a common assessment, a unit the team adopted, a program you started. Describe support for students with IEPs, 504 plans or still learning English by what you changed in the lesson.
  3. Skills. Instruction first (differentiation, standards-based grading, co-teaching, lab safety), then the platforms: the learning management system, the student information system and any assessment or probeware you use. Leslie prints these as labelled rows.
  4. Education. Degree, major and school. In your first few years, add student teaching (school, grade, subject) as a detail line under the degree.
  5. Certifications. The license with state, area and endorsement, written as it appears on your record. In Illinois that is the Professional Educator License (PEL), which must carry an endorsement in a licensure area. CPR and first aid follow if you coach or run labs.
  6. Leadership and activities. "Leadership and activities" holds coaching, clubs, team lead roles and committees. Principals hire for the building as well as the classroom, so two or three of these lines earn their space.

Middle School Science Teacher, Illinois PEL

Naperville, IL | hannah.kowalczyk@example.com | (630) 555-0193 | linkedin.com/in/sample-hannah-kowalczyk

Illinois-licensed science teacher with seven years in grades 6 to 8, now teaching five sections of seventh-grade life science at a public middle school of about 900 students. Known in the building for hands-on labs, clear data conversations with families and the school's Science Olympiad team.

Experience

Science Teacher, Grade 7, Prairie Glen Middle School, Naperville, IL (08/2021 to Present)

  • Teach five sections of life science, about 140 students a year, including one co-taught inclusion section with a special education teacher.
  • Rewrote the ecosystems unit around three stream-sampling labs; the grade team adopted it, and students meeting the unit standard rose from about 58% to 71%.
  • Adapt lessons for students with IEPs and 504 plans through guided notes, chunked lab steps and extended time, checked with case managers each quarter.
  • Lead the seventh-grade science PLC: write common assessments and run a monthly data review with three colleagues.

Science Teacher, Grades 6 and 8, Fox River Valley Middle School, Aurora, IL (08/2019 to 06/2021)

  • Taught sixth-grade earth science and eighth-grade physical science, moving both courses into Google Classroom during remote learning in 2020.
  • Contacted every family in the first month of each school year, so later conversations about grades started from a known name.
  • Supported about 20 English learners a year with vocabulary walls and sentence frames, planned with the EL teacher.

Leadership and activities

  • Head coach, Science Olympiad team, 2022 to present; the team reached the state tournament in 2025.
  • Member, school improvement team, 2023 to 2025.
  • Mentor to two first-year teachers through the district induction program.

Education

Bachelor of Science, Biology, Secondary Education, Northern Prairie University (05/2019). Student teaching: grade 8 science, spring 2019

  • Professional Educator License (PEL), Science endorsement, Illinois State Board of Education (2019)
  • CPR and First Aid, American Red Cross (2026)

Unit and lesson planning, Differentiated instruction, Lab safety, Formative assessment, Co-teaching, Standards-based grading, Google Classroom, PowerSchool, Nearpod, Vernier probeware, Family communication, Calm classroom management

How to make the sample yours

Put your license where it is seen first

Rewrite the headline and the opening words of the summary with your own state, subject area and grade band. If the license is pending, give the expected month instead of the letters.

Replace the unit result with your own data

Use a measure your school actually reports (a benchmark, a common assessment, a state test band) and say which one. With no numbers, describe the change you saw in student work and how you know.

Show how you adapt lessons

Keep one bullet on accommodations and one on language support, each naming a concrete method (guided notes, sentence frames, chunked instructions). Leave out student labels and diagnoses.

Lead each job with the grade the posting wants

Within a job, move the bullet about the matching grade or course to the top. An eighth-grade physical science opening reads the sample differently from a seventh-grade life science one.

Trim activities to what the school runs

If the posting mentions coaching, clubs or committees, keep yours. If not, one line in the activities list is enough.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Student names, photos or work samples with identifying details, on the resume or a linked portfolio.
  • A list of duties every teacher has ("planned lessons, graded papers, attended meetings") in place of what changed for students.
  • Mentioning the license only at the bottom of the page, where a screener checking eligibility may not reach it.
  • Acronyms for one district's local programs with no word on what the program was.

Frequently asked questions

Should a teacher resume be one page?

For most classroom teachers, yes. Two pages make sense after ten or more years with leadership roles, curriculum writing or a change of subject that needs explaining.

How do I show student results without state test scores?

Use any measure your school trusts: a common unit assessment, reading level growth, the share of students completing a project or passing a lab practical. If you have no numbers, describe the change in student work and how you saw it.

What should a first-year teacher put on a resume?

Student teaching becomes the main entry: the school, grade, subject, how many weeks and which units you taught on your own. Add substitute teaching, tutoring, camp or coaching jobs with children of the same age.

Should I include a teaching philosophy on my resume?

No. Keep the summary to facts (license, grades, subjects, strengths). A philosophy statement belongs in a cover letter or an interview answer, if the district asks for one.

How do I list more than one license or endorsement?

One line per license with the state and area, then the endorsements after a comma. If you are licensed in one state and applying in another, add your status there ("application submitted 09/2026") in the summary.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
