Financial controller resume template

Short answer

Catalyst suits financial controllers: it opens on your current role with no summary, so the close you run, the audits you delivered and the controls you built are read first. The fictional sample is a corporate controller at a three-entity distributor who halved the monthly close, built controls ahead of a planned IPO and led a NetSuite move, after assistant controller and audit senior roles.

Why Catalyst suits a financial controller resume

Catalyst starts on Work Experience with no summary, under teal headings and a large left-aligned name with the headline beneath. A CFO hiring a controller reads for close speed, audit results and controls, and gets them in the first lines, with the ERP and close tools in the skills rows after.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta keeps a summary and puts education right after the jobs in black and grey; better for a conservative employer or a first controller role.

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. Open with scope: entities, revenue, team size, reporting framework. Then close days before and after, audit outcomes (adjustments, material weaknesses, management letter points), controls built or fixed, systems projects, and one line on cash or working capital if you own it.
  2. Skills. Technical: close, consolidation, the GAAP areas you know well, internal controls, audit management. Tools: the ERP, close and reconciliation software, BI. Soft Skills: leading the team and working with auditors and the board.
  3. Education. Accounting degree and any graduate study with the year. Early public accounting training belongs in the experience section, not here.
  4. Certifications. CPA with the licensing state and year. Catalyst prints certifications last, so put CPA in the headline as well.

How to make the sample yours

Put CPA and scope in the headline

Catalyst has no summary, so the headline does the positioning: "Corporate Controller, CPA, Multi-Entity Distribution" tells a CFO your level and industry before the first bullet.

Measure the close

Business days to close before and after, late journal entries, reconciliations completed on time. Close speed with accuracy is the number controllers are compared on.

Report audits precisely

Audit adjustments by year, material weaknesses or significant deficiencies found or remediated, the timetable you kept. "Clean audit" alone is vague.

Describe controls work by its part

Documentation, walkthroughs, testing, remediation, management's assessment. Readers preparing for or living under SOX want to know which pieces you can carry.

Show systems leadership

ERP moves, close software, automated reconciliations, consolidation tools. Give the timeline and what changed for the team.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • financial controller
  • month-end close
  • consolidation
  • US GAAP
  • financial reporting
  • internal controls
  • SOX 404
  • external audit
  • account reconciliation
  • ERP implementation
  • NetSuite
  • ASC 606
  • team leadership
  • CPA

Mistakes to avoid

  • Close days with no starting point.
  • "Clean audit" without saying what that means.
  • Private company figures your employer has not made public; ranges are fine.
  • A list of every accounting standard; name the ones you implemented.

Frequently asked questions

How is a controller resume different from a CFO resume?

A controller resume proves accurate, timely books: the close, reporting, controls and audits. A CFO resume adds strategy, capital raising, investor relations and planning. If you already own budgeting or treasury, add it, but keep accounting first.

How do I show SOX experience?

Name the parts you did. Section 404 of Sarbanes-Oxley requires each annual report to include management's internal control report and its assessment of effectiveness, and the auditor attests to it except for emerging growth companies. Documentation, testing, remediation and preparing management's assessment are separate skills.

Should I give my company's revenue on my resume?

Yes for public companies, where it is published. For private companies, use a range or an approximate figure your employer would accept, and always give entity count and team size.

How much space should public accounting get?

Two or three bullets under one entry: client industries, size, and what you led. Controllers are hired on the books they have run since, not on audit hours.

How do I move from assistant controller to controller?

Show ownership: a close you ran end to end, an audit you managed, people who reported to you, a systems or controls project you led. Those are the gaps a CFO will probe.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 10 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
