Linux administrator resume template

Short answer

Meridian suits a Linux administrator: labelled skill rows separate Linux skills from automation and monitoring tools, and they print above the jobs, where an infrastructure lead looks first. The fictional sample keeps about 650 RHEL and Ubuntu servers patched, hardened and monitored for a Pittsburgh SaaS company, after two years supporting a university research cluster. He holds RHCSA and LFCS.

Why Meridian suits a linux administrator resume

Meridian prints summary, skills, work experience, education and certifications, so distributions, hardening, Ansible and monitoring are read before employers. Its labelled rows (Technical, Tools, Soft Skills) keep operating system skills apart from tooling, and the colourless layout with grey rules stays legible with dense command-line vocabulary.

Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst opens on your latest job with no summary; better for a senior administrator whose current platform work carries the case.

Meridian template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Distributions, fleet size, the environment (on premises, cloud, hybrid, HPC), the automation you use and your certifications. Mention on-call if you carry it.
  2. Skills. Technical for administration work (patching, hardening, SELinux, storage, systemd, backups); Tools for Ansible, Git, scripting languages, monitoring and cloud; Soft Skills for on-call incident handling and runbook writing.
  3. Work Experience. Fleet size and platform first, then what you changed: configuration moved into code, patch cycles without downtime, hardening rolled out, alerts that cut pages, restores tested. Give a number to each where you can.
  4. Education. Degree with the year, or a diploma or bootcamp. Many Linux administrators come from help desk or research computing; the jobs matter more than the degree here.
  5. Certifications. RHCSA, RHCE, LFCS or cloud certificates with the year, and an expiry where the certificate has one. Mention the top one in your summary.

Arjun Nair

Linux Administrator, RHEL and Ubuntu, RHCSA

Pittsburgh, PA | arjun.nair@example.com | (412) 555-0127 | github.com/sample-arjun-nair

Linux administrator with six years running RHEL and Ubuntu systems for a SaaS company and a university research cluster. Keeps about 650 servers patched, hardened and monitored, manages configuration in Ansible and shares a weekly on-call rotation. RHCSA and LFCS.

Experience

Linux Systems Administrator, Allegheny Cloud Software, Pittsburgh, PA (05/2022 to Present)

  • Administer about 650 RHEL and Ubuntu virtual machines across two data centres and AWS for a 24/7 SaaS platform.
  • Moved server configuration into Ansible roles kept in Git; a new server now builds in about 20 minutes instead of a day.
  • Run monthly rolling patch cycles with no customer-facing downtime and apply kernel live patches for urgent fixes.
  • Set SELinux to enforcing on every production host after writing policies for three in-house services.
  • Built Prometheus and Grafana alerts for disk, memory and service health, cutting overnight pages by about 40%.
  • Share a weekly on-call rotation and write post-incident reviews.

Junior Systems Administrator, Three Rivers University, Research Computing, Pittsburgh, PA (07/2020 to 04/2022)

  • Supported a 120-node Linux research cluster and its Slurm scheduler for about 400 researchers.
  • Managed accounts, storage quotas and LVM volumes and answered about 15 tickets a day.
  • Wrote Bash scripts that automated account creation and weekly quota reports.

Education

BS, Computer Science, Monongahela State College (05/2020)

Certifications

  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), Red Hat (2021)
  • Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS), The Linux Foundation (2025)

Skills

RHEL and Ubuntu administration, Patching and kernel live patching, SELinux and system hardening, LVM and file systems, systemd troubleshooting, Backup and restore testing, Ansible, Git, Bash and Python, Prometheus and Grafana, AWS EC2, Slurm, On-call incident handling, Runbook writing

How to make the sample yours

Size the fleet

Servers or VMs, distributions, data centres or cloud accounts. Fifty hand-tended servers and 650 managed through code are different jobs.

Show configuration as code

Ansible roles, Git workflows, build times before and after. It is the clearest sign you can scale beyond logging in to each box.

Put security work in plain terms

SELinux enforcing, SSH hardening, CIS benchmarks applied, patch latency cut. Leave out anything that would reveal a former employer's weaknesses.

Count the on-call results

Rotation length, incidents handled, pages reduced, post-incident reviews written. Hiring managers want to know how you behave at 3 a.m.

Match the posting's distribution

RHEL, Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE or Amazon Linux. List the family the posting uses first.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Commands and tools with no fleet size or result.
  • Calling yourself a DevOps engineer when you run servers; use the title you hold and show the automation.
  • Including hostnames, IP ranges or security gaps from an employer.
  • Listing a certificate that has expired without saying so.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Linux administrator list RHCSA, LFCS or both?

Both, if you hold them, with years. Red Hat awards the RHCSA for passing EX200, a performance-based exam on core RHEL administration. The Linux Foundation runs LFCS as an online, proctored, performance-based exam of two hours, and says the certification is valid for two years, so give its expiry too.

What is the difference between a Linux administrator and a DevOps engineer resume?

Administrators lead with the systems they keep healthy: fleet size, patching, hardening, uptime. DevOps engineers lead with delivery pipelines, infrastructure as code and developer tooling. If you have built some of both, put the half the posting asks for first.

How do I show automation without a DevOps title?

Name the tools and what they replaced: Ansible roles instead of manual builds, scripts instead of weekly reports, alerts instead of checks by hand. Give one before-and-after number.

Should I list Linux distributions and versions?

List the distribution families you run and add versions only when a posting names them. RHEL and Ubuntu experience transfer to their relatives, but readers search for the names.

How do I describe on-call work?

Give the rotation, the kind of incidents you handled and what you changed afterwards, such as alerts tuned or runbooks written. Fewer pages after your changes is the strongest line.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
