Medical coder resume template

Short answer

Meridian suits a medical coder: skills print above experience, so your code sets, specialties and E/M work are the first thing a coding manager reads, and the plain page suits hospital and physician-group hiring. The fictional sample codes cardiology and internal medicine encounters remotely for a physician network, with quarterly audit scores and provider queries, after starting as a coding assistant in a radiology billing office.

Why Meridian suits a medical coder resume

Meridian prints skills before work experience, so code sets (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II), specialties and E/M leveling are seen before the jobs, the order in which coding managers screen. Its labelled rows separate code sets from software, and the black-and-grey layout fits the conservative hiring of hospitals and physician groups.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath keeps the same skills-first order with full-width rules and a dot after each skill label, an equally plain choice.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Setting (inpatient, outpatient, professional fee, risk adjustment), specialties, code sets and your credential. From those four a coding manager decides whether to read on.
  2. Skills. Code sets on the Technical row (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS if you code inpatient, CPT, HCPCS Level II) with E/M, modifiers and queries, then tools: encoder, EHR, audit software. Meridian prints this before the jobs.
  3. Work Experience. Productivity (charts or encounters a day), audit accuracy, denial work and query volume. Say what you code (procedures, visits, inpatient stays) and for which specialties.
  4. Education. Health information or coding program with the year. Anatomy, physiology and medical terminology coursework helps new coders.
  5. Certifications. CPC, CCS or another coding credential with issuer and year. AAPC asks CPC holders to keep AAPC membership and earn 36 CEUs every two years. Meridian prints this near the end, so the headline also says CPC.

How to make the sample yours

Match the setting

Inpatient coders work in ICD-10-PCS and DRGs; outpatient and professional coders in CPT and E/M; risk adjustment coders in HCC capture. Rewrite the summary and skills for the setting in the posting.

Name your specialties

Cardiology, orthopedics, emergency, radiology, anesthesia: coding jobs are usually filled by specialty.

Quote audit accuracy with its source

Internal or external audit, the period and the score. Leave it out rather than guess.

Show query work

A bullet about provider queries shows you protect compliance without leading the provider toward a code.

Remote coding details

For remote roles, mention your secure home setup and the productivity standard you met.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • ICD-10-CM
  • CPT
  • HCPCS Level II
  • E/M coding
  • modifiers
  • coding accuracy

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing code sets without the specialties or settings you coded.
  • Audit percentages with no period or source.
  • Any patient information or chart details.
  • Using "billing" and "coding" as if they were the same job when you only do one.

Frequently asked questions

CPC or CCS: which coding credential should I list?

Whichever you hold, with the year. AAPC says the CPC covers ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II coding for outpatient and physician services; AHIMA describes its CCS candidates as experienced in coding inpatient and outpatient records. The posting usually says which it prefers.

How do I get my first coding job?

Lead with your credential and coding coursework, then any job near the revenue cycle: charge entry, document indexing, billing. Apply to roles where a senior coder reviews new coders' work.

What productivity should I put on a coding resume?

Charts or encounters per day or hour, with the record type. A productivity figure means little without the record type and accuracy next to it.

Should a medical coder include a summary?

Yes: two lines with setting, specialties, code sets and credential. In Meridian it sits right above the skills, so the two read as one block.

How do I list remote coding work?

Write "Remote" as the location and keep the employer and dates as usual. Add the productivity and accuracy standards you met from home.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
