Nonprofit program manager resume template
Short answer
Meridian suits a nonprofit program manager: it prints skills above work experience, so program design, outcome measurement and your case management system appear before the job history, and it has no colour to lose in a photocopy. The fictional sample runs a youth employment program for about 450 young people on a $1.4M budget from a city contract and foundation grants, after four years as a family case manager.

Why Meridian suits a nonprofit program manager resume
Meridian prints the skills section before work experience in labelled rows, so logic models, outcome measurement, grant reporting and the data system a nonprofit runs on are read before the job titles. It uses no colour at all, so the page prints and photocopies cleanly for an interview panel of staff, partners and board members.
Second choice: Daniel. Daniel keeps skills ahead of experience but sets headings in rounded grey pills, a softer look some community organizations prefer; its skills grid drops the row labels.
What goes in each section, in Meridian's order
Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Population served, program model, scale and funding mix, for example "youth workforce program, 450 participants a year, city contract plus three foundations". Executive directors read it to judge whether you can both run a program and report on it.
- Skills. Program work on the first row (logic models, outcome measurement, grant reporting, budgets, partnerships), data systems on Tools: Salesforce, Apricot, ETO or whatever the posting names. Add a Languages row if you serve participants in a second language.
- Work Experience. For each program you ran: participants, budget, staff, funders and two outcomes measured the way your funders measure them (completion, placement, retention at 90 days). Include at least one change you made and what it did to those numbers.
- Education. Degree, field and year. An MPA, MSW or nonprofit management certificate earns a line; coursework does not.
- Community roles. Coalition seats and volunteer roles show the relationships a program depends on. Keep it to two or three lines tied to the community you serve.

How to make the sample yours
Use your funders' outcome language
If the posting talks about placement, retention or housing stability, describe your results with the same terms and the same time windows your funders required.
Separate outputs from outcomes
Workshops held and meals served are outputs; jobs kept, credentials earned and housing kept are outcomes. Lead with outcomes and keep one output figure to show scale.
Show the money
Give the program budget, the funding sources by type (government contract, foundation, individual donors) and any grant you helped renew or win.
Protect participants
Never name clients or tell a story someone could be recognized from. Counts and percentages make the point without the risk.
Step up from direct service
If this would be your first manager role, lead with supervision, training and the program changes you proposed as a case manager or coordinator.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- program management
- nonprofit
- program design
- logic model
- outcome measurement
- program evaluation
- grant reporting
- budget management
- community partnerships
- case management

Mistakes to avoid
- Several lines about the mission and none about what your program achieved.
- Reporting only outputs (sessions held, people reached) with no outcome.
- Participant names, photos or stories that could identify someone.
- Leaving out the budget and the funders, which show how much responsibility you carried.

Frequently asked questions
How is a nonprofit program manager resume different from a corporate one?
The structure is the same; the evidence changes. Funders, participant outcomes, grant compliance and partnerships replace revenue and customers, and budgets are usually restricted to a purpose, so say who funded what.
Should I include volunteer work?
Yes, when it shows community ties or skills the role needs. Keep it to a few lines and label it as volunteer.
How do I show outcomes if my program never had a formal evaluation?
Use the measures you reported to funders: completion, placement, retention, pre and post scores. Name the period and the number of participants behind each figure.
Can I move from nonprofit program management into a corporate role?
Yes. Budgets, staff, vendors, data systems and reporting carry over. Rename the work in plain business terms (operations, service delivery, partner management) and keep the numbers.
Should a program manager list grant writing?
If you wrote or co-wrote proposals, yes, with the amount and the result. If you supplied data to a development team, say "contributed program outcomes to grant renewals" instead.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
