Nonprofit resume template
Short answer
Daniel fits nonprofit resumes: rounded grey heading pills soften the page, and its skills grid prints fundraising, program and database skills above the jobs. The fictional sample is a development manager at a youth literacy charity with grant wins, a stronger donor retention rate, a growing gala and a cleaner donor database, after starting as a food bank coordinator. NGO and program staff can swap dollars for people served and outcomes.

Why Daniel suits a nonprofit resume
Daniel is meant for program managers and others who want a softer page than rules alone give, and it prints its skills grid above work experience. For a fundraiser or program lead that means grant writing, stewardship and the donor database are read first, while the rounded heading pills keep the page warm rather than corporate.
Second choice: Leslie. Leslie puts experience ahead of skills under a centred blue header; better when a long record of grants and campaigns should lead.
What goes in each section, in Daniel's order
Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Name the cause, the size of the organisation (budget or staff) and your function: development, programs, operations, communications or advocacy. One line linking your work to mission results, such as children served or dollars raised, completes it.
- Skills. The grid has no labels, so lead with your function's core skills (grant writing, donor stewardship, major gifts, program evaluation), then systems (Raiser's Edge NXT, Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud, Bloomerang, Mailchimp), then other strengths such as board relations.
- Work Experience. Fundraisers give dollars against goal, donor counts, retention and grants won; program staff give people served, outcomes measured and partners. Add one bullet on money handling: restricted grants, budgets, reports to funders, or data you prepared for the annual Form 990 that most tax-exempt organisations file.
- Education. One line. A nonprofit management certificate or an MPA can sit here; for most roles the experience above carries more weight.
- Certifications. CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) from CFRE International requires education, professional practice and performance, and is renewed every three years. Include the year so a reader knows it is current.
- Board and volunteer service. Board seats and volunteer roles show your connection to the sector. For people moving in from business, this list is often the first nonprofit evidence on the page.

How to make the sample yours
Give goals beside totals
Netting $210,000 means more next to the goal or last year's figure. Do the same for grants (proposals sent and won) and donors (retention before and after your work).
Moving in from the corporate world
Sales maps to major gifts, marketing to the annual fund and communications, finance to grants compliance, HR to volunteer management. Rename your bullets in those terms and lead with any board or volunteer work.
Show you understand restricted money
Grants arrive with conditions and reporting dates. A line on tracking restricted funds or writing funder reports tells an executive director you will not create audit problems.
For international NGO roles
Institutional donors, logframes, field partners, safeguarding and languages matter. Name the type of funder rather than the funder, the countries you worked in and the languages you work in.
Name the database and what you fixed
Nonprofits run on their donor CRM. Say which one you use and one improvement: duplicates merged, gift entry rules agreed with finance, a report the board now reads.

Mistakes to avoid
- "Passionate about the mission" with no money raised or people served beside it.
- Claiming a whole campaign total when a team raised it; state your own portfolio.
- Donor names or gift amounts that identify a person.
- Leaving off the volunteer and board roles that connect you to the sector.

Frequently asked questions
How do I move from a corporate job into a nonprofit?
Translate your results into nonprofit terms and show a real link to the cause: volunteer work, board service, a pro bono project. Hiring managers want both the skills and evidence that you understand how a mission-driven organisation runs.
Should a nonprofit resume list volunteer work?
Yes, especially board service, volunteer leadership and anything connected to the role. Give it its own titled list at the end, with dates.
How do I show fundraising results from team campaigns?
Separate your portfolio from the total: "managed 120 mid-level donors who gave $310,000" rather than the whole campaign. If you led one piece, such as the gala, give that piece's numbers.
Is the CFRE worth listing early in a fundraising career?
CFRE eligibility includes professional practice and performance requirements, so it usually comes after several years in fundraising. Before then, list fundraising courses and let your results carry the page.
What do program staff put in place of fundraising numbers?
People served, outcomes measured (reading levels, housing placements, completion rates), partners and budgets managed. Pair each figure with how it was measured.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
