Professor and university lecturer resume template
Short answer
Henrietta suits a professor or lecturer who needs a resume rather than a full CV. It prints education straight after your appointments, so the PhD sits near the top, in the conventional black-and-grey style a search committee expects. The fictional sample is a chemistry senior lecturer aiming for teaching professor posts, with courses and enrollments, a redesigned lab sequence, an open problem book and three selected papers.

Why Henrietta suits a professor resume
Henrietta prints education immediately after work experience, the closest any of the seven templates comes to the academic habit of putting the doctorate first. Its plain layout with hairline rules looks like the documents committees are used to, and the three-column skills grid holds a list of course areas and teaching methods.
Second choice: Leslie. Leslie also prints experience before skills, under a blue header, but puts education after skills; choose it when leaving academia, where jobs matter more than the degree.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Field, rank and kind of institution, then teaching load and level: "senior lecturer teaching general and organic chemistry to about 400 students a year at a public research university". Add one line on your scholarship if you have some.
- Work Experience. One entry per appointment with rank and department. Bullets cover courses with level and typical enrollment, course changes and their effect, TAs or labs you supervise, advising, and service that took real time. Section-by-section teaching lists belong on the CV.
- Education. PhD with field, institution and year, then earlier degrees. A committee checking the terminal degree finds it straight after your appointments. Add the dissertation title only if it relates to the post.
- Skills. Course areas you could teach next term, teaching methods (peer instruction, flipped classes, inquiry labs) and platforms (Canvas, Gradescope). Henrietta's grid drops the group labels, so course areas go first.
- Projects. Use projects for course development: a redesigned lab sequence, an open textbook, an online version of a course. Name the course, what changed and how you measured it.
- Selected publications. Three to five "Selected publications" in your field's citation style, chosen for the post. The complete list stays on your CV.

How to make the sample yours
Use the rank you actually held
Lecturer, senior lecturer, instructor, teaching professor and clinical professor mean different things at different universities. Use the title on your appointment letter in each entry, and the advertised title in your headline.
Replace the courses with your load
List your own courses with level and usual enrollment. Committees for teaching posts compare load and class size before anything else on the page.
Keep one piece of teaching evidence
A teaching award, a peer observation, a change in DFW rates (the share of D, F and withdrawal grades) after a redesign, or themes from course evaluations. Choose evidence you can document.
Pick publications for the post
For a teaching-focused post, choose education research, textbooks and conference talks on teaching. For a research-intensive post, send the full CV instead of this resume.
Leaving academia? Translate the work
Describe courses as training delivered to groups of a given size, lab coordination as operations, TA supervision as managing a team. Keep one or two publications at most.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- course design
- curriculum development
- undergraduate teaching

Mistakes to avoid
- Sending a two-page resume when the search asks for a CV; follow the posting.
- Pasting every section number and term you taught instead of summarising by course and enrollment.
- Listing papers "in preparation" as though they were accepted.
- Dropping advising and service from an application for a teaching-focused post, where they are part of the job.

Frequently asked questions
Should a professor send a resume or a CV?
Follow the posting. Research-intensive faculty searches usually ask for a full academic CV. A short resume like this one fits community colleges and teaching-focused posts that request one, academic administration, and jobs outside universities.
How is a lecturer resume different from a teaching professor resume?
Mostly in rank and expectations. Both lead with teaching; teaching professor posts tend to add course coordination, service and the scholarship of teaching. Show those if you have them, and use the exact rank you held in each entry.
How many publications should go on a professor resume?
Three to five that fit the post, in your field's citation style. The full list belongs on the CV, which you can offer or link.
How do I show teaching quality on a resume?
With one or two pieces of evidence you can document: a teaching award, a peer observation, grade outcomes before and after a redesign, or recurring themes in course evaluations. Single student quotes carry little weight.
How long should a professor resume be?
Two pages for faculty with several appointments. Keep the current appointment and education on page one.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
