Public relations specialist resume template

Short answer

Olivia suits a PR specialist who wants the page to make a confident first impression: a full-width blue header band with the name in white, then a short skills block and the coverage record. Why Olivia suits a public relations specialist resume

Olivia opens with a full-width blue band carrying the name, contact line and title in white, the boldest header of the seven, which suits a job built on getting noticed. Skills print as short labelled rows above experience, so the media databases and specialisms are read in seconds before the coverage bullets.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie keeps one blue accent and puts experience first; better for government or corporate press offices that expect a plainer page.

What goes in each section, in Olivia's order

Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Agency or in-house, the sectors you pitch and the media you reach (national, trade, broadcast, local). Close with one thing beyond pitching that you own, such as crisis response, media training or measurement.
  2. Skills. Keep both rows short so the experience is not pushed down the page. Technical holds media relations, release writing, media training and crisis work; Tools holds the media database and monitoring platforms you open every day.
  3. Work Experience. Name outlets where you placed stories, since coverage is public and reads as proof. Then a bullet on how you build lists or pitches, one on writing (releases, briefing books, statements) and one on a difficult moment. Report results as target outlets reached and messages carried, not as advertising value.
  4. Education. Communications, journalism or public relations on one line. Once you hold an accreditation such as the APR, add it to the headline too, because certifications print near the end of the page.

Isabel Moreno

Public Relations Specialist, Consumer and Food

New York, NY | isabel.moreno@example.com | (212) 555-0181 | linkedin.com/in/sample-isabel-moreno

Public relations specialist with five years at an agency and a museum press office. Pitches consumer, food and fintech stories to national and trade media, writes the releases and briefing books behind them, and has run a product recall response from the first holding statement.

Experience

Public Relations Specialist, Halyard and Finch Communications, New York, NY (03/2022 to Present)

  • Pitch stories for five consumer clients, including a kitchen-appliance maker, a plant-based snack brand and a budgeting app; secured about 140 pieces of earned coverage in 2025, including two national morning-show segments.
  • Build media lists by beat in Muck Rack and write a separate pitch for each reporter group; track replies to see which angles land.
  • Wrote press releases, media kits and spokesperson briefing books, and ran mock interviews to prepare two founders for broadcast.
  • Handled a product recall for the appliance client with its legal team: a holding statement within two hours, a reporter Q&A and daily monitoring until coverage settled.
  • Report coverage monthly by target outlets reached and key messages carried, in place of advertising value.

Press Assistant, Greenpoint Museum of Design, Brooklyn, NY (07/2020 to 02/2022)

How to make the sample yours

Swap in your sectors and outlets

Technology, health, food, consumer, B2B trade press. Name a few real outlets you placed stories in; a reader recognises a masthead faster than a coverage count.

Replace AVE with outcome measures

If your agency reported advertising value equivalency, swap in other figures: share of coverage in target outlets, key messages carried, spokesperson quotes, or site visits and sign-ups after a story.

Show the writing behind the coverage

Releases, pitches, media kits, briefing books, statements. One line on the writing shows the craft that reporters actually see from you.

For press officer roles, lead with the desk work

Government and charity press offices value handling inbound calls, out-of-hours rotas, statements cleared with lawyers or senior officials and fast reactive lines. Move those duties into the first bullets and use the posting's title in your headline.

Anonymise clients when you must

Describe them by sector and scale ("a national kitchen-appliance brand") if your contract prevents naming them.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Advertising value equivalency as your headline result; the field's measurement association campaigns against it.
  • Claiming coverage you did not pitch or arrange just because it ran while you were on the account.
  • Listing "media contacts" as a skill without saying which beats or outlets.
  • A long list of every placement; choose the five or six that matter to this employer.

Frequently asked questions

Should I list the outlets where I secured coverage?

Yes: a few of the strongest by name, inside your bullets. Coverage is public, so it works as proof. Only claim pieces you pitched or arranged yourself.

Is the APR worth putting on a PR resume?

If you hold it, yes, and near the top, since certifications print near the end of the page. PRSA describes the route as an application, a panel presentation and a monitored online exam, followed by renewal to keep the credential current.

Is a press officer resume different from a PR specialist resume?

The evidence is the same family (statements, releases, coverage, crisis handling), but press office work is more reactive. If the posting says press officer, lead with inbound media handling, rotas and approvals, and use that title in your headline.

How should I report PR results without advertising value equivalency?

Use outcome measures: coverage in the outlets the client targeted, share of voice against competitors, messages carried, spokesperson quotes, or traffic and sign-ups after a story. AMEC, the communication measurement association, runs a campaign against AVEs, so many employers give them little weight.

What if my client work is confidential?

Describe each client by sector and scale and stick to coverage that has already run. A phrase such as "national kitchen-appliance brand" gives the reader enough context.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
