Sales representative resume template

Short answer

Henrietta suits most sales representatives: a conventional business page that prints work experience right after the summary, so quota results are the first evidence a sales manager sees. The fictional sample sells building materials to 85 contractors in a Phoenix-area territory, finished above quota two years running, opened 19 new accounts from building-permit leads and serves customers in Spanish.

Why Henrietta suits a sales representative resume

Henrietta prints the summary, then work experience, then education, so a rep's attainment figures land in the top half of the page. It is the conventional black-and-grey business layout, which fits trade, distribution and industrial sales, and its unlabelled three-column skills grid keeps a short skills list compact.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie also puts experience before skills and adds a centred blue header; choose it if you want one touch of colour.

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Industry, years, territory or customer type, and attainment in the last full year or two. A rep's summary can carry the single strongest number on the page.
  2. Work Experience. Quota, attainment and territory size go in the first bullet of each job. Then new accounts, one account you grew or won back, and how you find business. Name what you sell in plain words so a reader from another company can place it.
  3. Education. Henrietta puts education straight after the jobs. A degree, associate degree or trade course goes on one line; your sales record counts for more than the field of study.
  4. Skills. The grid drops group labels. Lead with selling skills (territory management, prospecting, quoting, negotiation), then the CRM and ordering system, then the languages you sell in.

How to make the sample yours

Put your real quota numbers in

Give the percentage, the quota and the year: "112% of a $5.5M quota, 2025". Two years in a row is stronger than one outstanding year.

Describe your territory

Geography, number of accounts and customer type (contractors, clinics, restaurants, retailers). It tells a hiring manager how close your old job is to theirs.

Show how you find new business

Permit lists, trade associations, referrals, walk-ins, cold calls. A bullet on your prospecting method separates a hunter from an order-taker.

Keep one account story

A lapsed customer won back, a small account grown, a lost one recovered. Give the annual spend before and after.

List the language you sell in

If you serve customers in Spanish, Vietnamese or another language, put it in the skills grid and mention it in the summary when the territory needs it.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid

  • "Responsible for sales in the region" with no quota, result or account count.
  • Removing every number to hide one weak year; show the good years and be ready to explain the other.
  • Generic traits (hard-working, people person) where attainment figures should be.
  • Naming products only by internal codes or house brands that nobody outside your company would recognise.

Frequently asked questions

How should a sales representative show quota attainment?

As a percentage with the quota size and the year, in the first bullets of each job. Add your rank on the team if it was strong, for example "third of 22 reps".

What if I missed quota one year?

List the years you hit it and leave the weak year without a figure. If the miss had a clear cause, such as a territory split or a product shortage, be ready to explain it in the interview.

Can I move from inside sales to outside sales?

Yes. Show account ownership, quoting accuracy, upselling and any customer visits you made. The sample's earlier inside sales job shows that bridge.

Should I list sales training or a sales methodology?

Only if the employer names it or it changed how you sell. A results bullet carries more weight than a course title.

How long should a sales rep resume be?

One page for most reps. Spend the space on numbers by year and a couple of account stories rather than a long list of duties.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
