Education resume template

Short answer

Daniel suits many education resumes: its rounded grey heading pills give a softer look than a page built only from rules, and its unlabelled skills grid keeps teaching strategies, classroom tools and languages compact. The fictional sample teaches seventh-grade maths in Texas after four years as a bank credit analyst, having qualified through an alternative certification program. Early childhood, vocational and online learning staff can adapt it.

Why Daniel suits an education resume

Daniel sets each heading inside a rounded light-grey pill, a slightly softer page than the rule-based layouts, and prints the skills grid before experience. A teaching resume is read by principals picturing how you will come across to students and families; the gentler look suits that, while the grid lists strategies, tools and languages in little space.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie prints classroom experience before skills under a centred blue header; choose it once your teaching record is long enough to lead.

Daniel template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Lead with certificate area and grade band ("certified in mathematics, grades 4 to 8"), then the students you teach and one result. Career changers add a clause on the earlier field and what it gives students, such as real budgeting problems drawn from banking.
  2. Skills. Daniel's grid prints without labels, so put teaching practice in the first group (differentiated instruction, small-group intervention, classroom management), classroom technology in the second and languages in the third. A language your students' families speak is worth listing.
  3. Work Experience. For teaching jobs write grade, subject, sections or students, and what changed: benchmark growth, students who left intervention, a unit you rebuilt. Duties beyond the classroom count too. For an earlier career, keep two or three bullets a school can use, such as explaining numbers, training colleagues or tutoring.
  4. Education. Degree, field and year, plus the educator preparation program if it was separate from the degree. Alternative certification candidates should name the program, because it is part of how they qualified.
  5. Certifications. Write the certificate the way your state does, with subject and grade band. In Texas, for example, every classroom certificate needs a bachelor's degree, an approved educator preparation program, the certification exams and fingerprinting for a national criminal background check. Daniel prints this near the end, so put the certificate in the headline too.
  6. School involvement. Clubs, coaching, committees and family nights show a principal you will help run the school, not only your own room. Three or four lines are plenty.

How to make the sample yours

Change subject and grade band everywhere

The headline, summary, certificate and first bullets must agree. An elementary generalist, a high school chemistry teacher and a special education teacher each need their own certificate wording and their own evidence.

Use student data without exposing students

Report class or group results, such as most of an intervention group moving up a performance level, rather than individual scores, and never name a student. Benchmark and state assessment growth are the usual sources.

Early childhood: swap scores for development

Preschool and child care roles look for developmental observation, family communication, routines and health and safety practice. Replace the benchmark bullets with those, and list the early childhood credentials your state recognises.

Training adults or building online courses

Vocational instructors and e-learning designers are judged on courses built, learners who completed and the tools used, such as an LMS or authoring software. Turn the classroom bullets into course and cohort bullets and keep the teaching practice.

Show what your first career brings

The sample turns banking into a budgeting unit and a maths club. Find the equivalent from your own field (lab safety from science jobs, writing from journalism, leadership from the military) and give it one bullet.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • lesson planning
  • differentiated instruction
  • classroom management
  • formative assessment
  • data-driven instruction
  • small-group intervention
  • IEP and 504 accommodations
  • English learners
  • Google Classroom
  • curriculum alignment
  • family communication
  • teaching certificate
  • professional learning community

Mistakes to avoid

  • Student names, photos or work samples that could identify a child.
  • A summary built on "passion for education" with no grade, subject or result.
  • Hiding your first career; a principal will see it on the application anyway, and it explains skills you bring.
  • Listing a certificate as held while it is still pending; write "expected" with the month.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a teaching resume when changing careers?

Put the certificate, or the program you are in, at the top, then teaching experience of any kind: student teaching, tutoring, coaching, training at work. Keep the earlier career, cut to the bullets that show you can explain, plan and manage people.

Should I include student teaching or internship placements?

Yes, until you have a full year as teacher of record. List the school, grade, subject and the unit you planned and taught, as you would a job.

How long should a teacher resume be?

One page for most classroom teachers, two for experienced teachers with leadership roles, curriculum work or several schools. Many districts also use an online application that collects your full history.

How do I show results without test scores?

Use intervention exits, reading levels, attendance at a club you run, units colleagues adopted or family turnout at events. Each shows the effect of your work without a state test.

Can teacher aides and paraprofessionals use this template?

Yes. Replace the certificate with any paraprofessional or child care credential you hold, and describe the students you support, the settings (small group, inclusion, one-to-one) and the teachers you work alongside.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
