Web designer resume template

Short answer

Olivia fits a web designer: its blue header band makes the page stand out on screen, and skills print above experience, so the platforms you build on are read first. The fictional sample runs a one-person studio building Webflow and WordPress sites for small businesses and nonprofits, with on-page SEO, accessibility checks and handover training in every project, after two and a half years at a marketing agency.

Why Olivia suits a web designer resume

A web designer's work lives on screen, and Olivia is the template that stands out most there: a full-width blue band with the name and contact line in white. Skills print above experience as labelled rows, so Webflow, WordPress, HTML and CSS are seen before the client list.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath also puts skills first, in a plain centred black and grey layout, better for in-house roles that sit close to development.

What goes in each section, in Olivia's order

Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Say what you design and build, on which platforms, and for whom. "Webflow and WordPress sites for small businesses" tells a reader whether you fit an agency, an in-house marketing team or a freelance brief.
  2. Skills. Design and build skills under Technical, platforms and analytics tools under Tools. Write HTML and CSS out if you hand-edit them; many web design jobs ask whether you can work beyond the page builder.
  3. Work Experience. For freelance work, use one entry under your studio name, then bullets on the kinds of clients, what each launch included and a result or two. A launch checklist (SEO basics, redirects, accessibility, speed) shows you finish sites properly.
  4. Education. Degree, diploma or certificate, with school and year. Web designers come from design schools, community colleges and self-teaching alike.

Web designer who plans, designs and builds websites for small businesses and nonprofits, mostly in Webflow and WordPress. Handles the site map, design, build, on-page SEO and handover training, so clients can edit their own pages.

Experience

Web Designer (Freelance), Moretti Web Studio, Tampa, FL (01/2021 to Present)

  • Designed and built 22 websites for local businesses, including a dental practice, two restaurants and a marine supply shop, each with a handover session so owners edit their own content.
  • Rebuilt a nonprofit's donation site in Webflow with a simpler page structure, bringing the donation form from four clicks deep to one.
  • Set up on-page SEO at every launch: page titles, meta descriptions, alt text, redirects from old URLs and a sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
  • Check color contrast and keyboard navigation on each site against WCAG 2.2 AA before launch.

Web Designer, Gulfside Marketing Group, St. Petersburg, FL (06/2018 to 12/2020)

How to make the sample yours

Link live client sites

Put a portfolio link in the header that leads to live sites, not only screenshots. Check every one still loads and still looks like your work.

Swap the platforms for yours

Replace Webflow and WordPress with Squarespace, Shopify, Framer or whatever you build in, and keep the HTML and CSS line only if it is true.

Spell out what a launch includes

The sample lists titles, redirects, alt text and a sitemap. Write your own checklist; it tells a client or employer what they get.

Use results you can defend

Page weight, load time, a shorter path to a key page, form submissions. Quote a client's numbers only with their permission.

Frame the freelance years for the job

For an in-house role, lead with collaboration (marketing team, content writers). For agency roles, lead with range and turnaround.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Portfolio links to sites someone else has since redesigned.
  • Calling yourself a web developer if you build only in page builders; developer postings expect code.
  • SEO listed as a skill with no sign of what you set up.
  • Naming clients you served under a white-label agreement with an agency.

Frequently asked questions

What separates a web designer resume from a web developer resume?

A web designer resume leads with layout, visual design, page builders and the client side of a project; a web developer resume leads with code, frameworks and systems. If you do both, say which you lead with.

How do I list freelance web design work?

As one entry with your studio or trading name, dates and location, then bullets grouped by the types of sites you build. A full client list is not needed.

Should a web designer know how to code?

Basic HTML and CSS help in most roles, even with Webflow or WordPress, because client requests often need small changes. List the level you really have.

Does SEO belong on a web designer resume?

If you set up the basics at launch, yes, because clients and employers ask about it. Be specific about what you do rather than writing "SEO expert".

Is accessibility worth mentioning?

Yes. Name the standard you check against (WCAG 2.2) and the checks you run, such as contrast and keyboard navigation.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
