Beauty industry resume template
Short answer
Leslie is a strong pick for beauty resumes because it prints experience before skills, and salons, spas and brands hire on the clients you kept and the work you can show. The fictional sample is a Texas-licensed cosmetologist who spent eight years behind the chair before becoming a regional educator for a professional hair colour brand, with rebooking rates, classes taught and product reaction reports.

Why Leslie suits a beauty resume
Leslie puts work experience straight after the summary and ahead of the skills rows, so a manager sees rebooking rates, service mix and the people you trained before a list of techniques. The centred blue header and short blue underlines add one touch of colour, which suits a visual industry without turning the page into a mood board.
Second choice: Olivia. Olivia's solid blue header band is louder and puts skills above the jobs, useful for makeup artists and beauty marketers applying on screen.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Open with your licence and its state, the services you are known for (colour, cuts, skin, nails, lashes, makeup) and the setting: salon, spa, med spa, retail counter or brand. Licences are issued by states and employers check them first, so the state belongs in the summary and the headline.
- Work Experience. Behind the chair, the evidence is rebooking rate, average service ticket, retail attached to services and the size of your regular book. For retail and brand roles, use sales per hour, classes taught, accounts supported and reorders. Name the services rather than writing "hair services".
- Skills. Technical: services and techniques (balayage, colour correction, extensions, chemical peels, gel extensions). Tools: the booking software and the platforms where you show work. Keep Soft Skills to consultation and teaching, the two things a salon owner or brand manager will test.
- Education. List the programme and its hours (cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, barbering) with school and year. For education roles, add any instructor training here too.
- Certifications. Your state licence goes here with the state named; leave the licence number off. Leslie prints this near the end, so repeat the licence in the headline. Brand certifications (colour, extensions, lash systems) can sit here too, dated.

How to make the sample yours
Put the licence and state up front
In Texas, for example, TDLR requires a 1,000-hour Cosmetology Operator course at a licensed school and passing written and practical exams, and the licence lasts two years. Every state sets its own rules, so name yours and check the receiving board before applying across a state line.
Show the book you built
Regular clients, rebooking rate, average ticket and retail per service tell a salon owner what you would bring with you. Round them honestly; an owner can tell an inflated book within the first week.
Link to work, not selfies
A portfolio or professional social account showing your own client work (with permission) is normal in beauty. Put one link in the header and keep personal accounts off the page.
Mention product safety work you handled
Under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022, FDA requires cosmetic companies to register facilities, list products and report serious adverse events. Educators, counter staff and salon managers who passed reaction complaints or patch-test records to a brand can say so in one bullet.
Switch the role, keep the structure
An esthetician leads with treatments, devices and results she can document; a nail technician with services per day and disinfection routines; a beauty advisor with sales per hour and loyalty sign-ups; a salon manager with team size, stylist retention and payroll.

Mistakes to avoid
- A licence with no state. A reader in another state cannot tell whether it transfers.
- Every product brand you have ever touched. Name the lines you are trained or certified in.
- Client photos used without permission, or a portfolio link mixed in with personal posts.
- "Creative and passionate" with no services, client counts or rebooking figures behind it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I show salon experience on a resume?
Give the salon type, your services, the size of your regular book, rebooking rate and retail per service. Add any assistants you trained and any education you led for the team.
Can I use a cosmetology licence in another state?
Sometimes, through reciprocity or endorsement, but rules differ by state and may require more hours or exams. Check with the board in the state you are moving to, and say in your summary if a transfer is in progress.
How do I move from behind the chair into a brand or education role?
Start teaching where you are: train assistants, run in-salon classes, present at distributor events. Write those as bullets with class counts and ratings, then put "educator" in the headline.
Should a beauty resume include a portfolio link?
Yes for stylists, makeup artists, estheticians and nail technicians whose work is visual. Use one professional link, with client permission for every image.
How long should a beauty industry resume be?
One page for nearly everyone in beauty, including senior stylists. Managers and brand leaders with several roles can use two.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
