Defense industry resume template
Short answer
FAANGPath suits most defense industry resumes: its labelled skill rows print before the jobs, so requirements tools and test methods are read first, with your clearance in the headline. The fictional sample is a systems engineer at a Huntsville defense contractor who served six years as an Army signal officer, with requirements ownership, interface documents, integration tests and design reviews, all described at an unclassified level.

Why FAANGPath suits a defense resume
FAANGPath is built for technical candidates who want tools and methods read before their jobs, and defense engineering screens check for systems engineering tools by name: DOORS, SysML modelling, test planning. Its black and grey page with full-width rules keeps a contractor's technical panel focused on the content.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints experience first with education right after it, a conventional choice for program managers and analysts.
What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order
FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Say what you work on (platforms, mission systems, software, logistics, program management), for which kind of customer, and your clearance level if the role requires one. Defense employers sort candidates by domain and clearance before anything else.
- Skills. Systems engineering methods in Technical, the tools defense programs use (DOORS, SysML modelling tools, test equipment) in Tools. Equipment you used in the military can be named here if it is unclassified.
- Work Experience. Use program-level evidence: requirements owned, interfaces closed, test events, design reviews, schedule milestones. Describe systems at an unclassified level only; if you could not say it in public, it does not go on the page.
- Education. Engineering and technical degrees on one line, with the exact discipline, since many defense engineering roles specify one.
- Certifications. Security certifications, systems engineering credentials or program management certificates, with dates. Put any certification the posting names first.

How to make the sample yours
State clearance exactly
Write the level and status ("Active Secret clearance") and, where useful, the investigation date. Never list a clearance you held in the past as active.
Keep everything unclassified
Describe systems by type and role, not capability details, deployments or locations. The NISPOM (32 CFR 117) sets contractor procedures to prevent unauthorized disclosure of classified information, and a resume is a public document.
Mention export control awareness
The ITAR implements the authority the Arms Export Control Act gives the President to control the export and import of defense articles and defense services. If you handle controlled technical data, one line on following those procedures helps; never include the data itself.
Translate military roles for industry
Platoon leadership becomes team leadership, equipment accountability becomes asset management, field exercises become test events and integration. The military-to-civilian guide covers the wider translation.
Adapt for program management and logistics
Program analysts lead with budgets, earned value and schedule; logisticians with readiness, supply and sustainment measures. The clearance line and the unclassified rule stay the same.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- defense
- systems engineering
- requirements management
- DOORS
- SysML
- interface control
- verification and validation
- integration testing

Mistakes to avoid
- Any classified, controlled or sensitive detail, however harmless it seems.
- A past clearance presented as active.
- Military acronyms that civilian recruiters at contractors will not recognise.
- Program names that are not public. Describe the system type instead.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions
Should I put my security clearance on my resume?
Yes, for defense and government roles: level, status and, if helpful, the investigation date. Leave out case numbers and personal details from the investigation.
How do I translate military experience for a defense contractor?
Name the equipment and systems you used at an unclassified level, convert ranks and units into team size and responsibility, and describe planning, testing or maintenance work in industry terms.
Can I get a defense job without a clearance?
Yes. Many positions accept candidates who can be granted one, and some need none at all. Read the posting closely for the level and timing it expects.
What should I leave off a defense resume?
Classified or controlled information, non-public program names, locations and dates of sensitive deployments, and anything export-controlled. When in doubt, describe the work in general terms.
Is a two-page resume acceptable in defense?
Yes, for experienced engineers and program staff with long technical histories. Keep the most relevant program at the top of each job either way.
Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
