Design and creative services resume template

Short answer

Daniel fits design work: its section headings sit in rounded grey pills, so the page looks considered while every word stays real text, and the skills grid lands before the jobs. The fictional sample is a senior brand and packaging designer at a Minneapolis studio who started on a grocery chain's in-house team, with a 22-product redesign, a brewery identity system, a preflight fix and accessibility checks.

Why Daniel suits a design resume

Daniel is the one layout of the seven that sets each heading inside a rounded grey pill, which reads as designed without turning text into graphics. Its three-column skills grid prints between the summary and the jobs, so craft areas, software and collaboration skills are visible before a creative director clicks through to your portfolio.

Second choice: Olivia. Olivia's full-width blue header band makes a bolder first impression on screen, a fit for brand roles where the page itself should show confidence.

Daniel template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name the discipline (brand identity, packaging, editorial, digital product, motion, environmental graphics) and the setting: studio, agency, in-house or freelance. Design is many trades under one word, and a creative director hunting for a packaging specialist skips a summary that only says "creative designer".
  2. Skills. Daniel prints three unlabelled columns. Put craft in the first (identity systems, packaging structures, typography, prepress), software in the second (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Figma), and the collaborative skills studios hire for in the third, such as presenting concepts and running feedback rounds. List only software you could use in a timed design test.
  3. Work Experience. Let each bullet follow a brief from problem to result: what the client or team needed, the constraint (budget, deadline, retailer rules, legibility, accessibility), what you made and what happened after launch. When the outcome was commercial, state it modestly; when nothing was measured, give scale instead: products, pages, screens, markets.
  4. Education. A BFA, design diploma or relevant certificate takes a single line. Studios weigh the work behind your portfolio link far more than the school, so do not pad this with coursework.
  5. Selected work. A short "Selected work" list points to the three case studies you most want opened, each with the client type and scope. Use the same project titles as your portfolio pages so a reviewer can match them in seconds.

Elena Marsh

Senior Designer, Brand Identity and Packaging

Minneapolis, MN | elena.marsh@example.com | (612) 555-0138 | elena-marsh.example.com | linkedin.com/in/sample-elena-marsh

Senior designer at an independent branding studio, leading identity and packaging projects for food, beverage and personal care clients from first sketches to press checks. Four years on a grocery chain's in-house team before that, so designs are built to hold up on a crowded shelf and survive a print schedule.

Experience

Senior Designer, Fieldnote Studio, Minneapolis, MN (03/2022 to Present)

  • Lead design on six to eight brand and packaging projects a year for food, beverage and personal care clients, from creative brief to press check.
  • Redesigned a 22-product granola line around one shared dieline and a flavour colour code, cutting plate changes per print run; the brand added two regional retailers the following year.
  • Built identity guidelines for a craft brewery covering logo use, type, colour and can labels, so its own team now produces seasonal releases without the studio.
  • Check client web and email work against WCAG 2.2 AA for contrast, text size and focus states before handoff to developers.
  • Mentor two junior designers and present concepts directly to client founders and marketing leads.

Production Designer, In-House Creative, Lakehaven Market, Minneapolis, MN (06/2018 to 02/2022)

  • Designed weekly ads, in-store signage and private-label packaging for a 40-store grocery chain.
  • Set up a preflight checklist for bleeds, dielines and spot colours; files returned by the printer dropped from several a month to almost none.
  • Moved signage into a shared template library, cutting the time to produce a store promotion kit from three days to one.

Selected work

  • Granola line refresh, 22 products, natural foods brand (portfolio case study)
  • Craft brewery identity and can label system
  • Grocery private-label packaging redesign, 120 products

Education

BFA, Graphic Design, Twin Rivers College of Art and Design (05/2018)

Skills

Brand identity systems, Packaging and dielines, Typography, Prepress and print production, Art direction, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Figma, Adobe Acrobat preflight, Concept presentations, Client feedback rounds, Mentoring junior designers

How to make the sample yours

Put the portfolio where it is seen

Add the portfolio address to the contact links and keep it short and readable. Reviewers often open it before reading a bullet, so the resume and the case studies should name the same projects in the same words.

Write constraints, not adjectives

Swap "creative" and "detail-oriented" for the constraint you solved: a 14-day retail deadline, one dieline shared across nine flavours, a legal panel that had to stay legible at small sizes. Constraints are what separate design from decoration.

Name the accessibility level you worked to

WCAG 2.2, the W3C Recommendation for web accessibility, sorts its success criteria into levels A, AA and AAA. A Justice Department rule (28 CFR 35.200) requires state and local government web content and apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, so designers who check contrast, focus states and text size can name the level.

Coming from marketing, print or photography

Marketing coordinators, print production artists and photographers often design more than their titles admit. Pull out the pieces you made yourself, name the software, and build two or three case studies before applying to studios.

Studio or in-house: shift the emphasis

Studios look for range across clients and quick turnarounds; in-house teams look for consistency across one brand and smooth work with product, legal and marketing. Rewrite the summary for whichever side you are applying to.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • brand identity
  • packaging design
  • typography
  • design systems
  • art direction
  • print production
  • prepress
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Figma
  • concept presentation
  • creative brief
  • brand guidelines
  • accessibility (WCAG)

Mistakes to avoid

  • A portfolio link that needs a password or opens on work from five years ago.
  • Rating software with stars or percentages. Name the tools and show what you made with them.
  • Claiming a whole campaign when you designed one part of it; say which pieces were yours.
  • A wall of client logos with no word on what you did for any of them.

Frequently asked questions

Should a design resume look as creative as my portfolio?

No. Keep the resume clean and readable and let the portfolio carry the visual range. A tidy page shows judgement, and text locked inside graphics can hide the very details a recruiter is looking for.

How many projects should I list on a design resume?

Three to five in a selected work list, matched to the case studies in your portfolio. Choose the ones closest to the job: packaging for a packaging role, product screens for a product design role.

How do I show results when design impact is hard to measure?

Use whatever the project tracked: retailers or sales after a redesign, sign-ups after a page change, fewer print errors, faster production, usability issues fixed. When nothing was measured, give scope and what the client did next, such as rolling the system out to more products.

Can I move into design from another field?

Yes, if you can show the work. Marketing, print production, architecture and photography all build design skills. Make two or three case studies from real or self-initiated briefs, take on a freelance or volunteer project, and lead the resume with that work.

Should freelance designers list each client separately?

Group freelance work under one entry with your studio name or "Independent designer", then give client types and two or three standout projects. Twenty short engagements listed one by one make the page hard to read.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
