Event planning resume template
Short answer
Olivia suits event planning, where presentation is part of the pitch: a blue header band carries your name, and labelled skill rows sit above the jobs. The fictional sample runs meetings for a Denver professional association after five years in hotel catering sales, with a 2,400-person annual conference, hotel contracts with no attrition penalties, sponsor revenue, a registration overhaul, an accessibility plan and the CMP in her headline.

Why Olivia suits an event planning resume
Olivia opens with a full-width blue header band and a white name, giving a planner's resume some of the polish clients expect from the events themselves. Its labelled rows put registration platforms, budgeting and contract skills above the jobs, and the page is built to stand out when it is opened on screen.
Second choice: Leslie. Leslie keeps one touch of blue but prints experience before skills, better when a long record of events you ran is the strongest evidence.
What goes in each section, in Olivia's order
Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Say which events you run and for whom: association conferences, corporate meetings, incentive trips, trade shows, weddings or festivals, with typical attendance. Someone who plans 40-person board retreats and someone who runs 5,000-person expos are hired for different jobs.
- Skills. Technical holds the planning work (budgets, venue sourcing, contract negotiation, run of show, contingency planning); Tools holds the platforms for registration, venue sourcing, floor plans and event apps. Product names such as Cvent tell an employer how quickly you can start.
- Work Experience. Events leave countable traces: attendance against goal, budget variance, room block pickup, sponsor and exhibitor revenue, survey scores, costs avoided in contract talks. Give two or three per event series, then one line on a problem you handled on site, which shows nerve as well as planning.
- Education. Hospitality, event management, communications and business degrees are all common, and none outweighs a record of events delivered. One line is plenty.
- Certifications. The Events Industry Council awards the CMP on professional experience, education and an exam, which makes it a recognised signal for association and corporate meeting roles. Olivia prints certifications near the end, so the sample also carries CMP in the headline.

How to make the sample yours
Count the room block, not just the room
For conferences with hotel blocks, give pickup against the contracted block and any attrition penalty avoided. Hotels and associations both read that as proof you can forecast attendance.
Show the contract side
Name what you negotiated: food and beverage minimums, attrition and cancellation clauses, concessions such as complimentary meeting space. Planners who protect the budget on paper get trusted with bigger events.
Plan for access and say so
The Justice Department's ADA rules for public accommodations list hotels and convention centres among the places they cover. If you arranged accessible registration, seating, captioning or transport, write it down; it shows care and lowers the risk for whoever hires you.
From the venue side to the planner side
Hotel sales, catering and convention centre staff already know contracts, banquet orders and timelines. Flip the perspective in your bullets, from selling space to planners to building programmes for attendees, as the sample does.
Weddings and social events
Social planners can swap association metrics for clients served a year, typical budget, vendor network and reviews. The section order and the layout stay exactly the same.

Mistakes to avoid
- "Detail-oriented and thrives under pressure" with no event size, budget or outcome behind it.
- Events you attended listed alongside the ones you actually planned or ran.
- Leaving out the budget. Employers want to know what scale of money you have handled.
- Sponsor revenue a sales team closed presented as your own; say what part you played.

Frequently asked questions
How do I write an event planning resume before my first planning job?
List the events you have organised anywhere: a fundraiser, a campus festival, a company offsite, a friend's wedding. Give guests, budget, vendors and what went right, and add any hospitality or venue work.
Which event numbers impress employers most?
Attendance against target, budget against plan, sponsorship revenue and attendee survey scores. For hotel-based events, room block pickup and attrition avoided are especially telling.
Should I include virtual and hybrid events?
Yes. Name the platform, the audience size and something you solved, such as time zones, speaker rehearsals or keeping remote attendees engaged. Running hybrid events is a skill of its own.
Is the CMP worth getting?
For association and corporate meeting roles it is a well-known credential, and the Events Industry Council bases it on experience, education and an exam. Wedding and social planners rely more on reviews, a portfolio and referrals.
How do I list lots of short contract events?
Group freelance or contract work under one entry, then pick the three to five largest or most relevant events as bullets. A long list of one-day jobs buries your best work.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
