Government resume template

Short answer

Leslie works well for government applications: experience prints straight after the summary, which is where a reviewer checks you against the announcement, and its single blue accent keeps the page formal. The fictional sample is a county procurement analyst applying for federal contract specialist roles, with month and year dates, weekly hours, contract values and FAR experience from a federal contractor. State, local and contractor jobs fit too.

Why Leslie suits a government resume

Leslie puts work experience straight under the summary and before skills. Government reviewers decide whether you qualify from the experience you describe, so the duties and results that match the announcement need to come first; the centred blue header is the only colour, which keeps the page formal.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta is plainer still, black and grey with education right after experience, useful when the announcement asks about your education.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Mirror the announcement title, and for federal jobs the series ("Contract Specialist, 1102"), then your level of responsibility: dollar values, number of actions, staff led. For state and local jobs, use the classification title in the posting.
  2. Work Experience. USAJOBS asks for employer, title, start and end dates with month and year, and hours worked per week for each job, plus series and grade for federal jobs; the sample puts hours beside the title. Then describe the duties the announcement lists as specialized experience in your own words, with values, volumes and timelines.
  3. Skills. Technical holds the rules and processes you apply (FAR, the state or local procurement code, source selection, cost and price analysis, contract administration). Tools holds systems such as SAM.gov, e-procurement platforms and the ERP purchasing module. Keep only what the announcement asks for.
  4. Education. Degree, field, school and year. If an announcement asks for particular coursework or credit hours, make them easy to find here.
  5. Certifications. Public procurement credentials such as UPPCC's Certified Professional Public Buyer (CPPB) or Certified Public Procurement Officer (CPPO) print at the bottom in Leslie. UPPCC certifies on a five-year cycle, so include the year.

How to make the sample yours

Fit federal applications on two pages

Since September 27, 2025, USAJOBS limits resumes to two pages, and OPM tells agencies that an applicant whose only resume is longer is ineligible for further consideration. Cut older jobs to one line each rather than shrinking the type.

Answer the specialized experience statement

Federal announcements describe the experience needed for each grade. Find the duties in your history that meet it and put them in the first bullets of the matching job, with numbers.

Translate private-sector experience

Corporate purchasing, vendor management, compliance and project work count. Describe them in public-sector terms (solicitations, evaluations, modifications, oversight, audits) so a reviewer can match them without guessing.

For contractor roles, add contract types and clearance status

Government contractors look for firm-fixed-price, cost-plus and time-and-materials experience, and for clearance status where a role needs it. State the level and whether it is active; never describe classified work.

State and local: follow the posting's format

Many state and local agencies use their own application forms and supplemental questions. Keep the resume consistent with your answers, since reviewers compare the two.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • procurement
  • Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR)
  • contract administration
  • solicitations
  • source selection

Mistakes to avoid

  • A three-page resume for USAJOBS, which limits resumes to two pages.
  • Leaving out weekly hours or month-and-year dates on a federal application.
  • Pasting the announcement's wording without describing your own work.
  • Any detail from classified programs, even in general terms.

Frequently asked questions

How is a federal resume different from a state or local government resume?

Federal resumes on USAJOBS need month and year dates, weekly hours and, for federal jobs, series and grade, and they are limited to two pages. State and local agencies set their own rules, often with an application form and supplemental questions alongside the resume.

How do I fit a long career into two pages?

Give full bullets only to roughly the last ten years and to older jobs that meet the specialized experience. Earlier roles can take one line each with title, employer, dates and hours.

Should I put my series, grade or salary on the resume?

Series and grade, yes, for any federal job; USAJOBS asks for them. Leave salary off unless the announcement asks for it.

How do I move from the private sector into government?

Read the qualifications section of announcements you want and map your experience to it duty by duty. Use government terms where they describe your real work, and keep the dates, hours and two-page limit if you apply federally.

What should a government contractor resume add?

Contract types, the agencies you supported, whether you were prime or subcontractor, and clearance level and status if the job requires one. On the business side, contractors also value FAR and DFARS knowledge.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
