Mining resume template

Short answer

Catalyst suits experienced mining people because it skips the summary and opens on the current site, where fleet, availability and safety records do the talking. The fictional sample is a maintenance planner at a Nevada open-pit copper mine who spent six years as a heavy equipment mechanic, with haul truck availability, planned work, a component life tracker, two shovel shutdowns and current MSHA surface training.

Why Catalyst suits a mining resume

Catalyst sets a large left-aligned name and goes straight into work experience with no summary, so a maintenance or mine superintendent reaches your fleet and results at once. The headline carries trade and MSHA status, and labelled skill rows after the jobs give equipment models and planning systems a clear place.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta adds a summary and prints education right after the jobs, a better fit for mining engineers and geologists whose degree matters early.

Catalyst template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. With no summary on the page, the headline names your trade, the mine type and your MSHA status. Then give mining evidence: tonnes moved or milled, equipment availability, planned against reactive maintenance, cost per operating hour, days without a lost-time injury. Name the fleet (haul trucks, shovels, loaders, drills) and say surface or underground.
  2. Skills. Technical holds trade and planning skills (diagnostics, component life planning, shutdown scheduling); Tools holds the equipment models and the maintenance and fleet systems. People hiring for the same fleet look for the same makes and models.
  3. Education. A diesel technology or heavy equipment programme, an apprenticeship, or a mining engineering or geology degree, each on a single line.
  4. Certifications. MSHA training is a condition of working on site. Under 30 CFR 48.25 a new surface miner receives at least 24 hours of training, 8 of them before starting work, and 48.28 adds at least 8 hours of refresher training each year. Write surface or underground and the year your refresher is current to.

Maintenance Planner, Ridgeline Minerals, Silverpine Copper Mine, Battle Mountain, NV (03/2021 to Present)

  • Plan maintenance for 28 haul trucks, three electric rope shovels and six blasthole drills at an open-pit copper mine moving about 180,000 tonnes a day.

  • Lifted planned work from 55% to 78% of maintenance hours with weekly schedules agreed with operations.
  • Built a component life tracker for engines, wheel motors and final drives that now sets the annual rebuild budget.
  • Planned two major shovel shutdowns that finished on schedule with no lost-time injuries.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Sagebrush Equipment Services, Elko, NV (05/2015 to 02/2021)

  • Diagnosed and repaired engines, hydraulics and drivetrains on haul trucks, loaders and dozers at three mine sites under service contracts.

How to make the sample yours

Flag underground experience

New underground miners need at least 40 hours of training before they are assigned work (30 CFR 48.5). If you have worked underground, say so in the headline; it widens the sites where you can start without a long induction.

Turn breakdowns into planned work

Mines track how much maintenance is planned rather than reactive, and how long components last against target life. A bullet showing either moving the right way is a planner's best evidence.

From construction, oil and gas or the military

Heavy equipment, diesel, electrical and blasting skills carry straight over. Name equipment that matches the mine's fleet, list your safety training, and show you are comfortable with remote rosters and long shifts.

Add roster and location facts

Many mines run rotations such as fly-in fly-out or four on, four off. Say which you have worked and where you will live or travel from; remote sites raise that question early.

Adapt for operators and geologists

Equipment operators lead with machines, tonnes moved and safety record. Geologists and mining engineers lead with deposit type, models, software and the mine plan decisions their work supported.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • mining
  • heavy equipment maintenance
  • maintenance planning
  • equipment availability
  • haul trucks
  • preventive maintenance
  • component life tracking
  • shutdown planning
  • diesel diagnostics
  • hydraulics
  • MSHA Part 48
  • mine safety
  • open-pit mining
  • SAP PM
  • reliability

Mistakes to avoid

  • No mine type or commodity; a surface gold mine and an underground coal mine are very different jobs.
  • Safety written as a value instead of a record of training, incidents and audits.
  • Equipment named only by category ("heavy machinery") when the make and model are what a planner looks for.
  • A profile paragraph you expect to appear; this layout leaves summaries out, so trade and training belong in the headline.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a mining job with no mining experience?

Show transferable trade and equipment experience from construction, agriculture, oil and gas or the military, plus safety training and a willingness to work rosters. Some mines hire trainee operators and give new miner training on site.

Should I list MSHA training on my resume?

Yes, with the type (surface or underground) and when your annual refresher was last completed. It tells a site whether you need new miner training or only site-specific training before starting.

What numbers matter on a mining maintenance resume?

Equipment availability, planned against reactive work, component life against target, cost per operating hour and safety record. Pick the ones your site actually tracked.

How do I write about rotation or fly-in fly-out work?

Put the roster in a bullet ("14 on, 14 off, fly-in fly-out") and show you managed handovers between crews. It signals you already know the lifestyle.

Can I move from mining to other heavy industries?

Yes. Maintenance planning, heavy equipment, electrical and safety skills carry into construction, quarrying, oil and gas, utilities and ports. Swap tonnes for the new industry's output measure.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
