Resume template for shift work and night shifts
Short answer
FAANGPath suits shift work in technical operations: it prints your tools and systems before your jobs, and its summary is the first thing under the header, which is where your shift availability belongs. The fictional sample is a network operations technician on rotating 12-hour shifts with two years of nights, showing the patterns they can work, solo overnight incidents and handover notes.

Why FAANGPath suits a shift work resume
FAANGPath is built for technical candidates who want tools read before jobs: monitoring, ticketing and networking skills sit right under the summary in labelled rows. The summary sits directly below the centred header, so the shifts you can work are the first sentence a NOC supervisor reads, and certifications follow the work history.
Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst opens straight on work experience with no summary; choose it if your current shift job says everything and your availability fits in the headline.
What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order
FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Name the patterns you have worked and the ones you will accept: rotating, 12-hour, permanent nights, weekends. Shift supervisors fill a schedule before anything else, so stating this plainly can save a screening call.
- Skills. Lead with the monitoring and ticketing tools the operations team uses, then networking knowledge. Overnight staff often have nobody to ask, so list what you can troubleshoot alone.
- Work Experience. Put the shift type in the title or first bullet. Then show what nights or rotations demanded of you: running incidents alone, escalating to the right person, and notes the next shift could act on without phoning you.
- Education. Qualification, school and year. A networking or IT program belongs here; general courses do not need listing.
- Certifications. Network and hardware certifications print after education, so the most relevant one is also named in the summary for a screener who stops reading early.

How to make the sample yours
Describe your rotation in their terms
If the posting says "2-2-3" or "four on, four off", use the same words for patterns you have worked. If you have not worked that one, say which you have.
Show the hours you worked alone
A line about being the only technician on site overnight tells a supervisor you make decisions without someone to check with, which is the main worry with night staff.
Make your handovers a bullet
Shift work goes wrong at the changeover. A handover template you wrote, or a habit of closing every ticket note before 7 a.m., belongs in the experience section.
Count the cover shifts you took
Picking up extra nights during a staffing gap shows reliability across the rotation. Give the number if you know it.
Use the layout for shift work outside IT
Nursing assistants, production operators, security officers and dispatchers can follow the same pattern: shift type, solo responsibility, handover, attendance. Swap the tools for the equipment or systems of your trade.
Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid
- Offering "any shift" when certain nights or rotations are impossible for you. Schedules are planned weeks ahead, and backing out later leaves a gap for the whole team.
- Leaving out night or rotating work because it feels like a detail. For a shift role, it is the qualification.
- Writing about tiredness or sleep habits. The resume shows you handled the shift; how you manage it is your own business.
- Folding overnight incidents into vague "monitored systems" bullets. Say what happened and what you did about it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I show night shift experience on a resume?
Write "night shift" or the hours in the job title line, then add bullets about duties specific to nights, such as working alone or handling emergencies.
Should I list which shifts I can work?
Yes, in the summary. Name the patterns you can commit to, such as rotating 12-hour shifts or permanent nights, so the schedule question is answered up front.
What skills matter most for shift work?
Handling problems alone, clear handover notes, steady attendance across the rotation and the technical skills of the job itself. Show each through a bullet.
Can I use this resume to move from nights to days?
Yes. Keep the shift detail, since it shows independence, and say in the summary that you are now looking for day hours.
Do I need to explain why I want shift work?
No. Say which shifts you are available for; reasons such as study or family timing stay off the page.
Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
