Restaurant resume template
Short answer
Catalyst suits experienced restaurant managers and chefs: it skips the summary and opens on your current kitchen or floor, so covers, food cost and inspections lead. The fictional sample is a kitchen manager at a busy Chicago casual dining restaurant who was a sous chef first, with weekly volume, a lower food cost, faster tickets, clean inspections and his food safety certification in the headline.

Why Catalyst suits a restaurant resume
Catalyst goes from the header straight into work experience, which suits restaurant hiring, where an operator wants to know at once how big a room you have run and what happened to cost and speed. Its labelled skill rows follow the jobs, and teal headings in IBM Plex Sans keep a dense page easy to scan.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta keeps a summary in a classic black and grey layout, a better fit for hotel, contract catering or corporate dining roles.
What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order
Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Work Experience. With no summary on a Catalyst page, the headline names kitchen or front of house, the restaurant style and your food safety certification. Then put volume (covers a week, seats, sales), cost (food or labor as a share of sales), speed (ticket times, table turns) and inspection results in the bullets. Those four tell any operator whether you can run their room.
- Skills. Technical for cost, inventory and line skills; Tools for the POS, inventory, scheduling and ordering systems. A language spoken in your kitchen deserves its own row.
- Education. Culinary school or a hospitality degree on one line. Plenty of chefs and managers learned on the line, so leave this short rather than padding it.
- Certifications. Name the exact food safety credential. ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification, administered by the National Restaurant Association, is accredited by ANAB under Conference for Food Protection standards. Catalyst prints this last, which is why the sample also carries it in the headline.

How to make the sample yours
Lead with volume and style
A 40-seat tasting menu and a 300-seat sports bar need different managers. Put covers a week, seats or annual sales in the first bullet so a reader can place you.
Write cost as a share of sales
Food and labor cost are tracked as percentages of sales. Show before and after, and say what you changed: pars, portioning, prep lists, waste logs, vendor bids.
Report inspections plainly
Local and state regulators use the FDA Food Code, a model code for restaurants and other food businesses, as the basis for their own food safety rules, and inspections check against those rules. A record with no critical violations is evidence; describe your own logs and checks as well.
Switch the sample to front of house
Floor managers and servers can swap food cost for labor cost, sales per labor hour, check average, table turns, guest scores and beverage sales. Keep the inspection and training bullets.
Translate restaurant work for other employers
Hotels, hospitals, schools and contract caterers hire restaurant managers. Stress volume, cost control, safety records and training, which carry across all of them.

Mistakes to avoid
- A profile paragraph for this layout. Catalyst does not print one, so role, style and certification go in the headline.
- Dishes or cuisines you love in place of volume, cost and safety results.
- Food cost "reduced significantly" with no percentage or timeframe.
- An expired food safety certificate shown as current.

Frequently asked questions
What should a restaurant resume include for a first job?
Your availability, any customer or team experience (sports, volunteering, retail) and certificates you already hold, such as a food handler card where your area asks for one. Say how quickly you learned a station or task.
How do I show I can handle a busy service?
Give covers per shift or week, seats, and a speed measure such as ticket times or table turns. One bullet on how you organised the line or your section during a rush shows more than "works well under pressure".
Should servers and bartenders list sales figures?
Yes, if you have them: check average, upsell results, beverage sales or contest wins. Tips are best left off.
How do I move from restaurants to an office job?
Translate the numbers: food and labor cost become budget management, scheduling becomes workforce planning, guest complaints become customer escalations. Operations, purchasing, customer service and hotel roles value that experience.
Do I need culinary school for a kitchen manager job?
No. Many kitchen managers and chefs came up from prep and line cook roles. Operators look at volume, cost control, safety records and how well your kitchen trains people.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
