Travel and tourism resume template

Short answer

Meridian suits most travel and tourism jobs: its labelled skill rows print above the jobs, so your booking system, languages and travel products are read first. The fictional sample is a corporate travel consultant in Seattle who started in cruise reservations, with weekly booking volume, a stranded group rebooked overnight, hotel attachment, ticket credits recovered and the Certified Travel Associate credential.

Why Meridian suits a travel and tourism resume

Meridian sets Technical, Tools and Soft Skills rows above work experience, and in travel the booking system is often the first filter: an agency that runs Sabre wants to see Sabre before anything else. A languages row prints there too, and the colourless page stays neat when an agency owner prints it out.

Second choice: Daniel. Daniel keeps the same section order with softer grey heading pills, a good match for leisure advisors and tour companies.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Say which side of travel you work in (leisure, corporate, groups and events, cruise, tour operations, destination management) and the volume you handle. "Travel" is a loose label; a cruise line, an airline and a corporate agency each look for different experience.
  2. Skills. Name your GDS (Sabre, Amadeus, Travelport) and any booking or expense tools in Tools, and the travel products you know in Technical. Languages sit in their own row; in many travel roles they are part of the job rather than an extra.
  3. Work Experience. Show volume (bookings or trips a week, travelers, group sizes), a disruption you handled, and one commercial result: conversion, hotel or add-on attachment, savings for a client. Travel employers want proof you stay accurate when everything changes at once.
  4. Education. Tourism, hospitality and geography degrees are common but rarely required. Keep it to the degree, school and year.
  5. Certifications. The Travel Institute's Certified Travel Associate asks for at least a year of experience selling travel, 16 course modules and a proctored exam passed at 70% or higher, so it signals working experience as well as study. Meridian prints this last; repeat it in the headline.

How to make the sample yours

Put your booking system under your name

Many agencies and travel management companies train on one GDS. If yours matches the posting, write it in the headline, as the sample does with Sabre.

Turn a disruption into numbers

Travelers rebooked, hours to recover, a stranded group moved overnight. Disruption handling is what clients remember and what interviewers ask about.

Switch the sample to leisure or tours

Leisure advisors use sales volume, repeat clients, supplier relationships and specialist destinations. Tour operators and guides use group sizes, departures run, guest ratings and itineraries designed.

Count savings and revenue for your own accounts

Unused ticket credits applied, negotiated rates used, add-on sales. Give totals for the accounts you handled, not the whole agency.

Bring languages and places forward

Destinations you know well, languages you speak and regions you have lived in are real selling points. Put them in skills or the summary, not in a hobbies list.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • "Love to travel" as a qualification. Employers want booking, selling and problem-solving evidence.
  • Leaving out the GDS or booking platform, often the first filter for agency roles.
  • Counting the agency's total sales as your own.
  • A list of countries visited on holiday in place of destinations you have sold or planned.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a travel industry job without experience?

Customer service, sales and hospitality jobs translate directly. Highlight reservations or booking work, languages, and any group travel you have organised (a club trip, a team event), then learn a booking system through a course.

Is a travel certification worth listing?

Yes, if it is recognised in your segment. The Travel Institute's CTA requires a year of selling experience, so it tells employers you have already worked in the field.

How do I show disruption handling on a resume?

Give the event, the number of travelers and how fast they were rebooked or looked after. One concrete line beats "calm under pressure".

Can tour guides and travel agents use the same layout?

Yes; only the evidence changes. Guides lead with tours run, group sizes, languages and guest ratings, agents with bookings, sales and accuracy.

Should personal trips go on a travel resume?

Only when they serve the job, such as having lived in a region you would sell or speaking its language. Otherwise leave holidays off.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
