Aviation resume template

Short answer

Catalyst is a good fit for experienced aviation professionals: it drops the summary and starts with the current job, so fleet, checks and record quality lead, with your FAA certificate in the headline. The fictional sample spent six years as an Air Force crew chief before becoming an A&P technician at a regional airline in Wichita, with heavy checks, troubleshooting, an away-from-base recovery and clean audit records.

Why Catalyst suits an aviation resume

Catalyst opens on the latest job and prints no summary, so an operator sees fleet type, the checks you perform and the quality of your records straight away. The headline under the large left-aligned name carries the certificate, and labelled skill rows after the jobs give aircraft types a clear place.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath prints a summary and skills rows before the jobs, better for pilots or technicians moving to a new aircraft type.

Catalyst template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. Without a summary, the headline names your trade and certificate. Bullets then carry fleet type and size, the checks you perform (line, heavy, component), the systems you specialise in and the quality of your records. In aviation, clean paperwork is as much a result as a repaired aircraft.
  2. Skills. Aircraft types and maintenance tracking software go in Tools; systems expertise goes in Technical. Type experience is a filter: an operator flying the same airframe will search for it by name.
  3. Education. An aviation maintenance technician school, an associate degree or military technical training on one line. If your school was a certificated aviation maintenance technician school, say so, since that is one route to the mechanic certificate.
  4. Certifications. Write the certificate and ratings as the FAA issues them. Under 14 CFR 65.77, applicants qualify through a certificated maintenance school or with at least 18 months of practical experience for one rating, or 30 months working on both at once. Catalyst prints this last, so the sample repeats A&P in the headline.

How to make the sample yours

Put certificate and aircraft types up top

Write "FAA A&P" and your main aircraft types in the headline. Hiring managers at airlines, repair stations and charter operators look for both before reading further.

Translate military maintenance

Swap military jargon (skill levels, unit names, form numbers) for civilian terms: inspections, components, aircraft release, records. The military-to-civilian guide covers the wider translation.

Adapt for pilots, dispatchers and ground roles

Pilots lead with certificates, ratings and flight time by category; dispatchers with their certificate and the fleet they plan; ramp and operations staff with turn times and safety records. The layout stays the same.

Show safety and quality habits

Audit results on your records, a safety report you filed that led to a fix, tool control. Aviation employers hire for discipline before speed.

Give fleet and shift context

Number of aircraft, line or heavy work, day or night shift, main base or outstation. That context lets a reader picture where you would fit.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • aircraft maintenance
  • A&P
  • airframe and powerplant
  • line maintenance
  • heavy checks
  • troubleshooting
  • maintenance manuals
  • maintenance records
  • FAA regulations
  • inspection
  • hydraulics
  • landing gear
  • borescope
  • safety management
  • aircraft types

Mistakes to avoid

  • Opening with an objective statement. Catalyst prints no summary, so the certificate and types belong in the headline.
  • "Certified aircraft mechanic" without the ratings and the issuing authority.
  • Military acronyms and form numbers that civilian employers will not recognise.
  • Leaving out record keeping and audits, which aviation employers weigh as heavily as repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list FAA certificates on a resume?

Write the certificate and ratings in full, such as "FAA Mechanic Certificate, Airframe and Powerplant ratings", with the year, and repeat the short form (A&P) in your headline. Pilots list certificate, ratings and medical class the same way.

Should I list flight hours or aircraft types?

Types, always, for maintenance and flight roles. Pilots also give total time and time by category; technicians can mention years on each type instead.

How do I move from military aviation into civilian jobs?

Translate the work into civilian terms, list the FAA certificates you hold or are testing for, and name aircraft or systems that match the operator. Keep records of your military maintenance experience; the mechanic certificate can be earned through documented practical experience as well as through a school.

Is customer service experience useful for airline jobs?

Yes, for gate, ticketing, reservations and cabin crew roles. Show volume, calm handling of disruptions and any languages you speak.

How long should an aviation resume be?

One page for most technicians and early-career pilots; two once you have long type histories, instructor work or management roles to list.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
