Resume template for a part-time job

Short answer

Meridian works for a part-time application because it prints skills right after the summary, so a manager sees the software and desk tasks you can take on from the first short shift before reading your jobs. The fictional sample is a receptionist looking for 20 to 25 weekday hours at a veterinary clinic, with fixed availability, two part-time jobs and shelter volunteering. The same layout suits a second job or casual work.

Why Meridian suits a part-time resume

Meridian sets skills above work experience, which suits a part-time hire who has to be useful from the first four-hour shift: practice software, payments and check-in are listed before the job history. It uses no colour, so the copy you hand in at a clinic front desk prints and photocopies cleanly.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie prints work experience ahead of skills; pick it if years of steady part-time employment are the strongest thing you can show.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Hours first. A part-time manager is building a rota, so give the weekly hours you want, the days and times you can work, and whether that changes during school holidays. The last sentence can say what you do well at the desk.
  2. Skills. Name the systems you can run without training (practice software, card terminal, phone system) and the tasks you can cover alone. Short shifts leave little time for learning on the job, so this list answers "how soon can you help?".
  3. Work Experience. Put the weekly hours in each title line. Bullets should show how much you handle inside a short shift and how you pass unfinished work to the next person, because part-time staff rarely see a task from start to finish.
  4. Education. A certificate or diploma with the year is enough. If a course taught the scheduling software or medical terms the practice uses, add it to the detail line.
  5. Volunteer work. Regular volunteering shows commitment outside paid hours. Keep the dates and how often you go, and pick activity close to the job where you can, such as shelter work for a vet clinic.

How to make the sample yours

Answer availability in the posting's own terms

If the ad lists mornings, evenings or Saturdays, reply in the same words. "Weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., year-round" is far easier to schedule than "flexible".

Holding a main job? Give your finish time

For a second job, keep your main job on the page as your current role and add the time your workday ends, or your days off, to the summary. The manager needs to see there is no clash.

Write casual or on-call work as one entry

If you picked up shifts as needed for one employer, use a single entry with "casual" or "on-call" in the title and the full date range, then describe the shifts you usually worked. Do not split it into a dozen short jobs.

Keep your reason for part-time off the page

Interviewers sometimes ask whether you will leave for full-time work. Have an honest answer ready for the conversation; the resume itself only needs your hours.

Reorder the desk skills for the practice type

A dental or medical office cares about insurance verification; a vet clinic asks about estimates, vaccine records and handling animals at check-in. Move the matching skills to the front of each row.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • part-time
  • appointment scheduling
  • client check-in
  • payment processing
  • multi-line phones
  • ezyVet
  • Dentrix
  • treatment estimates
  • vaccine records
  • weekday availability
  • shift handover
  • customer service
  • medical terminology

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "available any time" when you are not. A shift you agreed to and then cannot cover does more harm than a narrow but honest window.
  • Leaving the weekly hours off earlier part-time jobs. Without them, three years at 16 hours reads as three full-time years, and a reference call will correct it.
  • Mentioning childcare, health or other private reasons for wanting fewer hours. Your availability is the only thing the employer needs.
  • An objective about wanting "work-life balance". State the hours and what you will get done in them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a resume for a part-time job?

Many part-time roles in offices, clinics and shops still ask for one, and having it makes the application form quicker. One page with your hours, skills and recent jobs is plenty.

Where do I put my availability on a part-time resume?

In the first or second sentence of the summary, with days and times. When your window is narrow, a short version in the headline helps too.

Should I list my full-time job when applying for a second job?

Yes, as your current job with its dates. It explains your schedule and shows you are employable. You do not need to say why you want the extra income.

How do I list casual or on-call work on a resume?

As one job entry with "casual" or "on-call" in the title, the full date range and a line on how often you were called in. Use the bullets for the work you did on those shifts.

Should a part-time resume be shorter than a full-time one?

It can be the same one page. What changes is emphasis: hours and dependable attendance near the top, fewer long descriptions of projects.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
