Resume template for a summer job
Short answer
Meridian fits a student's summer job application: it prints skills right under the summary, so the equipment you can already run and your driver's license are read before a short job history. The fictional sample is a first-year environmental science student applying to a city parks grounds crew, with exact summer dates, last summer's landscaping job and campus volunteering.

Why Meridian suits a summer job resume
Meridian places skills above work experience, which helps a student whose one summer job is short but whose practical skills (mowers, trimmers, small-engine checks) are exactly what a crew lead screens for. It has no colour, so a copy dropped at a parks office or handed over at a job fair prints sharp.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education directly after experience; choose it for office or lab summer jobs where your major and courses matter more than equipment.
What goes in each section, in Meridian's order
Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Your first and last available days come first, then the weekly hours you want. Summer employers plan the whole season around who is free when, and a student who leaves before August needs to say so now, not in July.
- Skills. What you can do without training: equipment you have run, a driver's license if the job involves driving, first aid. Meridian prints these as labelled rows, so machines can sit under Tools.
- Work Experience. Last summer's job matters most; write "(summer)" in the title and give the months. A school-year job can follow in two lines if it shows you turned up week after week.
- Education. The degree you are working toward with "Expected" and the year, plus a course that touches the job. Your school calendar also tells the employer when you head back to class.
- Volunteering and campus activities. Volunteering and campus activities fill the space a short job history leaves. For outdoor jobs, pick outdoor or hands-on activities and keep each to one dated line.

How to make the sample yours
Put your exact summer dates in the summary
Check your last exam and your fall move-in date before you apply. A crew lead who knows you are free from mid-May to late August can plan training around you.
Say if you were invited back
If last summer's employer asked you to return, add that to the job entry; it is strong evidence. If you hope to come back to this employer next year, mention it in the interview.
Match the skills to the kind of summer job
A camp wants first aid and experience with children; a pool, a lifeguard certificate; an office, spreadsheets. Swap the grounds crew skills for the job in front of you.
Mention transport if the site is out of town
Parks, farms and golf courses are often hard to reach by bus. If you have a car or a reliable bike route, a short phrase in the summary answers the question.
Refresh it every spring
Add the latest summer job, update the dates and drop older high school activities once a college job or volunteer role tells the same story.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- summer availability
- grounds maintenance
- mowing and trimming
- landscaping
- equipment checks
- valid driver's license
- outdoor work
- early starts
- crew work
- safety
- punctual
- physical stamina
- environmental science
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing "available for the summer". It could mean six weeks or fourteen, and the employer will choose the student who gave dates.
- Hiding that you return to school in August. Summer managers expect it; finding out late is what annoys them.
- Claiming to be skilled on equipment you used for one afternoon. Crew leads hand you the machine on the first morning.
- Filling the page with clubs from years ago when a recent job or volunteer role makes the same point better.

Frequently asked questions
What should I put on a resume for a summer job?
Your summer dates, any previous summer or part-time job, the practical skills the job uses, your school and expected graduation year, and one or two activities.
When should I start applying for summer jobs?
Check each employer's posting dates, because some summer programs open applications months ahead. Having the resume ready early in the year means you never miss one.
Should I say I am a student on a summer job resume?
Yes. It explains why the job ends in August and gives the employer a reason to ask you back the following summer.
What if I have never had a summer job?
Lead with skills and volunteering, and include regular paid work such as babysitting or mowing for neighbors. The summary and your dates still do most of the work.
Can I reuse my summer job resume next year?
Keep the layout and update it each spring: add the latest summer job, change the dates and remove the oldest activities.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 4 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
